I travel a lot for work so don’t want to pay the freight of a private course. May play once a week max, and the buddies I play with prefer to float around to whatever public course is in the best shape...but even then it’s a struggle to get a tee time.

It seems your average public courses that used to be decent and $40-$50 are a little nicer, but $70-$80 a round. The $40-$50 courses now are on the decline and usually overcrowded and in bad shape.

What are the solutions here? Like I said, you play once a week, but as a single digit handicap prefer to play a decent course but have a budget.

If it matters that much to you and you are honestly on a tight budget - just skip dinner once or twice a week and play the better courses

Public golf appears to be on the decline. From what I’ve experienced, the majority of them are spending less on maintenance. I expect that’s partly due to fuel costs.

Quality, particularly on the greens is suffering. If I played more I’d just bite the bullet and get a membership somewhere

This statement contradicts everything that has been said on this board about how busy golf courses have been the last couple of years.

Public golf is booming, the game has never been more popular.

Public golf conditions are suspect as hell right now, like someone said might have something to do with fuel right now.

They're also having the same staffing issues every service sector is.

Yup, and that’s also a big part of it.

Curious about TopGolf. Any idea how TopGolf prices now compare to a couple of years ago? Are they pretty much the same or have they gotten to be more expensive?

Golf popularity might be increasing, but courses and maintenance of courses is on the decline.
Courses are closing here in Central Florida and the green fees are double for average courses.

This particular course has always been mediocre, but geez ...

My handicap is creeping up but less than the rate of inflation.

I mainly play in the flighted amateur tournaments. I haven't noticed a lot price increases (yet). The courses I have played are in better than average condition. I have noticed that the drink girl has been non-existant at several of our recent tournaments.

Come play Mayfair in Sanford.
It’s a cheap muni ($40-50ish on weekends)
But the greens will always be great. We just hosted the NJCAA womens national championship.

with me and spouse now both over 35, so our dues went up 60 dollars this year. Also, the club voted to raise dues by another 40 across the board so im 100 more than last year, and due to birth of little one, playing once a week if im lucky

Love that course.
Play it often.

Just crazy how many "good" courses are struggling here. RedTail is up and down. Victoria Hills is beat up. MetroWest is hot-garbage. And they all still want $65-75 (or more) for tee times.

Raising prices creates a sorting mechanism for golfers. At the end of the day these prices will be sticky unless you see a loss of income in the aggregate. There's just more golfers than past years on a fixed supply of courses and tee times.

The best way to cut costs on the other side - don't drink during the round and buy refurbished balls online. Play twilight rates and search for hot deals on GolfNow.

Crazy how red tail has been. The last year and a half has been horrible. I think they’re finally turning it around a bit. Eagle dunes took advantage of that big time.

I play Mayfair nearly every Sunday skins game and a couple of the mid week afternoon games. The city has pumped some money into it this year with a lot of tree trimming, new cart paths and supposed to have the new club house started by the end of the year. Fingers crossed.

Ok, didn’t say that well obviously.

Your comment about conditions was what I was referring to. We’ve got 3 public options in Tuscaloosa right now since Hidden Meadows sold (Greens were bad there too)

Tall pines greens are just flat awful.
The Links aren’t very good either
Old Colony is in good shape, but they spend the necessary money on greens maintenance

I’ve been killing it with hot deals on golf now.

I also buy balls from Costco. Problem is I’m probably looking to upgrade clubs soon
