Singapore craft beer uses recycled sewage to highlight water scarcity.

quote:

It is a beer made with only the finest ingredients: premium German barley malts, aromatic Citra and Calypso hops, farmhouse yeast from Norway – and reclaimed sewage

NewBrew, a collaboration between Singapore’s national water agency and the local craft brewery Brewerkz, has already proved popular and has sold out on tap at the brewery’s restaurants, according to reports.

Brewerkz describes the beer as “highly quaffable” and suitable for Singapore’s tropical climate, with a smooth, toasted honey-like aftertaste. But it is also intended to cast a light on the climate emergency, and the growing threat that droughts and floods pose to the world’s fresh water supply.

Sounds a lot like Dixie Beer. What's the problem?

Pretty much all drinking water is from treated sewage in one form or another. Municipal water treatment plants discharge water back into lakes and rivers that eventually flow back to the ocean where it becomes part of the global water cycle. You've been drinking Singaporean piss-water.

Yeast isn't bacteria... although some sour beers and other beverages do use bacteria. That's a small percentage.

Yup. Some Austin breweries got busted recently for using it without disclosing.

I work in the water biz and can tell you that in drier places with huge population growth, like here in central TX, “toilet to tap” will be the norm w/in a decade.

The water cycle says it’s all recycled piss.

Yeasts are not bacteria.

I wouldn't try it.

100% of climate scientists agree that virtually all water has passed through the bladder of a creature at some point in time.
