A sequel to the 1995 crime/drama masterpiece. I've preordered my copy. Anyone else getting it? It's both a prequel and sequel.

quote:

One day after the end of Heat, Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer) is holed up in Koreatown, wounded, half delirious, and desperately trying to escape LA. Hunting him is LAPD detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino). Hours earlier, Hanna killed Shiherlis’s brother in arms Neil McCauley (De Niro) in a gunfight under the strobe lights at the foot of an LAX runway. Now Hanna’s determined to capture or kill Shiherlis, the last survivor of McCauley’s crew, before he ghosts out of the city.

In 1988, seven years earlier, McCauley, Shiherlis, and their highline crew are taking scores on the West Coast, the US-Mexican border, and now in Chicago. Driven, daring, they’re pulling in money and living vivid lives. And Chicago homicide detective Vincent Hanna—a man unreconciled with his history—is following his calling, the pursuit of armed and dangerous men into the dark and wild places, hunting an ultraviolent gang of home invaders.

Meanwhile, the fallout from McCauley’s scores and Hanna’s pursuit cause unexpected repercussions in a parallel narrative, driving through the years following Heat.

Interesting. Has Michael Mann ever written a book before or just screenplays? I would have to imagine annoying Al Pacino voice if i read the book though. Hoooooo Haaaaaaaa.

Yeah I actually thought he did a pretty good Al growl

Finished it this weekend.

Enjoyed it, Mann definitely writes like he’s writing a screenplay, very vivid visuals like he’s trying to storyboard as he’s writing.

A fair amount of cheese, with plenty of contrived coincidences and noir stereotypes, but ultimately he did a good job of showing us how Hannah and McCulley got to be the guys that they were when sitting in that diner in the 90s.

Loved seeing where and how Chris ended up, and definitely ends in a way that we could see more in the future.

Really wish he would have written this 20 years ago so we could have seen these characters on screen again.

It's great for that purpose. The originality of the title conveys that.

Agree. Really enjoyed it. Made me realize how good his characters were in the first one.
