What are your thoughts on this album? And what are your thoughts about the smashing pumpkins before and after this album?

Excellent album. Before is better, after is a pretty significant cratering.

Most of the album is filler with 28 songs and 5 singles.
Had it been just 1 disc with:
"Bullet with Butterfly Wings"
"1979"
"Tonight, Tonight"
"Zero"
"Thirty-Three"
And 9 of your other favorite songs to round out 14 tracks, it would have been better overall. I get they were..or Billy was trying to make The Wall in the 90s, but it just felt weak.

Was a good album with some great songs.
I think it was too ambitious and it included too many songs that were b sides at best.
Had they trimmed the fat and only had 13-15 songs, it would have been amazing.
Not as good as Siamese Dream but still pretty damn good.
And while we are at it, Gish is criminally underrated

Gish & Siamese Dream are much better.

If I remember correctly, he wrote around a 100 songs for the album, but could only fit so much

1997 - Grammy Album of the Year
Winner: Celine Dion, Falling Into You
What should have won: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

Their pinnacle achievement. Throw in the Aeroplane Flies High box set, and you'll get a taste for just how much effort went in to making the album. [Hidden gem - Set the Ray to Jerry]
I feel like this album really set them apart from the other acts during this time. MCIS had something for everyone.
I'm more a fan of the non-singles on the album.
Beforehand, Gish and Siamese Dream were both great albums.
After MCIS was more for the real fans. I just love Adore. Machina I and II are also full of fantastic work.
I've been a huge fan for a long time.
Billy and company are, in my opinion, the best the 1990's has/had to offer.

I think it is their best album because of how well rounded the album is.
You have electronic, ballads, hard rock, metal, all wrapped up into one album.
Of the SP albums I like, I rank them like this.
1) SD/MCIS
2) Adore
3) Machina
4) Gish
5) Pisces Iscariot
6) Oceania
7) Zeitgeist

This is the correct answer. Some really good songs amid a sea of dross.
Here's a question: which is the better 90's double album: Smashing Pumpkins' Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, or NIN's The Fragile? Gotta go with NIN on this one.

Once upon a time I would have agreed with you, but mostly due to the production. I've always liked both records, but I felt quite a few songs were flat. Time jump to years later when I have it on vinyl, and my opinion has completely changed. It's a beautifully produced record that does not translate well digitally. CD did is absolutely no justice as it requires full sound to truly appreciate it. I love all but maybe two songs off of it now, and I still notice that it doesn't work as well when I stream off of Spotify.
Regarding OP's second part:
Pre Meloncollie is epic, absolute classic. I believe Gish and Siamese Dream are two of the best first two records released by any band. Everything post Mellon is just not very good. There are some fine moments here and there, but overall it is incredibly weak.

I sincerely believe that I could listen to “Rhinoceros” every day and never get tired of it.

Siamese Dream is better IMO but it’s it’s a great double album for sure

Not my favorite Pumpkins album (Siamese Dream takes that spot, which is also probably my favorite album in general) but still very enjoyable.
I was actually listening to it the other day. Was gone away from the internet etc for about five days and had Muzzle stuck in my head for some reason. Was the first thing I cranked on when I got home.

Outside of the singles, these are all really great songs.
Porcelina of the Oceans Vast
Thru the Eyes of Ruby
Jellybelly
Here is no Why
Bodies
Where Boys Fear to Tread
In the Arms of Sleep
Beautiful

The original vinyl had a different ordered track list that flowed much better. You can find it on YouTube or Spotify. LINK
