Defense at a glance... Give it some thought.

Defensive players that have good playing time

Curtis Taylor – Senior-- Possible Replacements: Chad Moody, Stefoin Francois, or a true Freshman.

Tremaine Johnson – Senior-- Possible Replacements: Jonathan Nixon, Chancey Aghayere, Chase Clement, Lazarius Levingston, or a true Freshman

Of the 20 that play consistently, only 7 wont be here next year. Mainly on the DLine. You can make the case that any of these players could start the game. If you allow me to say that, then we have 13 returning starters on defense. 8 will be seniors, 4 Juniors, 1 Sophomore. Combine that with a top 5 recruiting class year in and year out. The players aren’t the problem, Les said so… “they give good effort.”
It seems like the cycle of players is consistent, 7 seniors leaving, 8 rising seniors. The coaching staff needs a change. I think firing Mallory and Peveto would be a little too extreme. They apparently were great position coaches. Lets give them the help they need by bringing in a ready head DC. I’ve become a big fan of Dick Bumpas and his mustache.
I hope this was enough research for you vultures out there. I know some of you won’t see the point of this thread, just putting some things in perspective for those who are interested.

Good post. Future is great. Sure,a lot on the rant thrive on negativity and the desire to say "I told you so". Still,even with that ,some of the same mistakes were made vs Georgia that have happened all year and were magnified in Gainesville. Hopefull corrections will be made and we see improvement for the rest of the season.

If you look at any of my posts in regards to the defense last year, I thought Pelini was decent but mostly over-rated. I was glad that he left for Nebraska. Mallory and Peveto have continued this scheme that has not worked since about the 5th game of last year.
Most fans thought as long as we were winning that it must have been working. Not always the case. I would like to see a proven DC brought in to straighten out the defensive problems.
I don't like what I keep hearing from Miles about the scheme and play-calling being correct, just not the execution. That's just not true, you have to run a scheme that is best suited to your personnel AND one they are COMFORTABLE with. The job of an OC is to run plays and formations to confuse or trick the defense and get them confused.
Miles doesn't appear to be headed in the direction of firing these 2 clowns or hiring a proven DC. As much as i love LSU, I fear that this will be a MAJOR mistake.
In reading on DD about some recruits seem to have taken LSU off their list, I can't say that I blame them. Kids want to play for a good program and it seems that LSU is losing some of its luster. At least that's what they are hearing and reading in the media. Then they take in the UGA game and see a confused defense that appears to be poorly coached. The offense does well but you wouldn't know it because of the result.
I think that LSU CAN stay a powerhouse program but it remains to be seen. Les should have used the juice of the program and hired a proven DC. I'm sure plenty of DC's would have been chomping at the bit to come here.
I hope we continue to have top recruiting classes but I think defensively it will be hard to compete with Saban at Bama, especially with our Co-DC's. Also offensively we will no doubt compete w/ UF along with MANY others in our conference. If you were not an LSU fan, what reason would you have for going to a team that APPEARS to be in disarray?

im usually the last person to blame coaching, but the two headed monster at DC isnt working. the players have a great deal of respect for peveto (check spelling?) but i dont know too much about mallory so i wont say anything. as a huge fan of upbeat defensive coaches myself, there is only one cure for the sickness we have on defense and that is will muschamp. we should have picked him up last year when we had the chance. i think this is a rebuilding year at this point and we should be fine in the years to come.
as far as players for next year, watch out for ryan baker. he's a stud on the kickoff team and he has his own highlight reel of big hits on special teams alone. relax fellas, i think we'll be fine it should just be another year before we get back on top.

Junior college transfer Jasper Brinkley led the team in tackles and earned first team All-SEC accolades at middle linebacker.
In his first year in Columbia, Nix served as co-defensive coordinator and tutored the defensive line. Under his watch, a pair of Gamecocks, cornerback Johnathan Joseph and safety Ko Simpson were selected in the NFL Draft. In addition, Simpson earned All-America accolades.
Nix has risen quickly through the coaching ranks. At just 34 years of age, he is the one of the youngest defensive coordinators in Division I college football.
During his 10 years on the Southern Miss staff, Nix coached every position on defense. In his last four seasons, he served as the Golden Eagles' defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach. In that 10-year period, he mentored 12 All-Conference USA selections, four C-USA Defensive Players of the Year and six All-America selections. USM also enjoyed team success, winning four C-USA championships and earning seven post-season bowl berths.
Nix's Southern Miss defenses ranked among the nation's toughest during his final years in Hattiesburg. In 2003, they ranked No. 5 in the nation in pass defense, No. 13 in pass efficiency defense, No. 14 in scoring defense and No. 23 in total defense. Nix's coaching efforts were recognized as he was a finalist for the Broyles Award, given to the nation's outstanding assistant coach.
In 2002, Southern Miss ranked No. 4 nationally in pass efficiency defense, No. 10 in pass defense, and No. 15 in scoring defense.
Entering the 2001 season, Nix had the distinction of being the youngest coordinator in the country at 29 years of age. Despite losing seven defensive starters from the 2000 squad, Nix's 2001 USM defense ranked among the nation's leaders in scoring defense (8th), total defense (11th), pass efficiency defense (12th), rushing defense (13th) and turnover margin (21st).
Nix earned his bachelor's degree from Southern Miss in 1995 after being a standout linebacker and team captain.
Nix and his wife, Toya, have one son, Tyvari, and one daughter, Tiah.
If he could do all that at Southern Miss and South Carolina, just think what he could do with all of our 4 and 5 star athletes

Dandy Don also said that if a recruit takes LSU off his list b/c of one loss then we don't want that type of player at LSU anyway.
I believe that Dandy Don is correct. It is completely retarded to think that a team will win every game every year (this should also be true with a fan base as well). If they take LSU off the their list b/c of what happened against UGA and UF then piss off we don't want ya.

Too many people bought into the Pelini is a great DC media frenzy. Mainly because we won "Despite" our D last year.
Many thought the D went downhill because of injuries last year, but I think it went downhill because the scheme isn't very good. Some can correct me if I'm wrong, but Pelini's scheme was always pretty soft, but was predicated on creating turnovers. When they don't create turnovers, they aren't very successful.
If you have the stomach, on one play Pittman actually dropped into coverage to cover Moreno 1 on 1 coming out of the backfield. MS didn't see him because he was completing a pass to another open receiver. Now I've seen DE's drop into coverage, but not singled up with a back. Usually it's into a zone.

i hate to bring him up, but that was the type of defense Saban ran. tough, in your face, bump and run, dont let them get off the line smoothly, blitz boldly... i loved that scheme. i miss that scheme. I cant stand liars but i do wish that a brain like sabans was coaching our defense.
