Always had trouble understanding Neil Young's lyrics

it's always come across as a slight, but it can't be paying tribute to the Old Man....help?

Imo, it’s a generational slight to the literal boomers who were looking down on the hippies/protestors on his era.

I always thought it meant I don't have to put forth a lot of effort to mean that much to you. Maybe talking to a father? Something like that. Overall the song is not negative toward the subject. "Old Man I'm a lot like you were."

Heard him say the song's about this caretaker on a ranch he bought. That part of the deal when buying was it came with the old man and he was to keep him on.

Just because you don't like his politics, doesn't mean he isn't a legend. I don't like Pearl Jam, but I understand their place in rock history. Neil Young is one of the greats, whether any of you like it or not.

Saw his new movie tonight, Harvest Time. Neil fans will really enjoy it. Limited theater showings so check it out. Making of Harvest and filmed in the studio and at his CA ranch. Said Alabama could've been titled for any other southern state. Don't agree with all his politics but love his music. The DVD is not yet available.
