Coworker got TSwift tickets for his daughter - $750 for bleh seats.
Is going to a live show worth the cost of owning an artists entire discography?
I’m struggling to justify the cost of seeing live performances anymore.

live music is the most enjoyable way to consume the art, fo me. what that is "worth" is entirely subjective

No way I’d spend $750 to see Taylor swift. I would spend that to see David gilmour at the pyramids of Egypt.

Concerts are out of control with their prices now. I have mostly stopped going as a result. Not only do the bands overcharge for shows now, but you also have ticketmaster raping people with their ridiculous processing fees ($75 for The Cure for instance!)
But people keep dropping their coin on these ludicrous prices, so why should the greedy musicians not charge these prices? Until the consumer stops supporting these costs then it will remain the same and continue to go even higher.

I think that’s what has me down. Hard enough to swallow the cost of decent seats, but then you find out it’s an extra $300-$400 with the junk fees for a set of tickets.

you can bang on ticketbastard all you want (I sure do) but the issue is available tickets not ticket pricing. If the market for Taylor swift is 750 for a pair then why should she/they not get that?
I wouldn’t get off my couch for less than that. Now multiply that by three/four shows a week for three months. I saw on a post this morning she’s playing 30+ songs over a 2.5 to 3 hr show

I refuse to pay more than 15 bucks for a ticket and I’m not going to the place where drinks are 10 bucks anymore
Music is the easiest job in the whole world. You play guitar, you sing the songs, you get free beer, chicks tell you that they like your band. It’s a joke how easy it is. It’s not even worth 15 bucks but Ryan adams I hear is 15 after he got canceled so I’ll go see him

I agree that free market is free market. Only issue is Ticketmaster and Live Nation are one in the same and have what is basically a monopoly on a lot of these events. In many cases they own everything from the venue to the ticket distribution.
The fees are atrocious. The venue my wife works at puts on Live Nation shows, but is not directly owned by them. Tickets sell through Ticketmaster (Live Nation), but also directly from their venue's physical box office. I regularly get tickets for friends and family through her instead of buying online because the fees are not included if you show up and buy in person. The fees they charge are just "let's see how much we can turn the screws until they stop buying".
As far as paying for live music, I'm spoiled in that we don't have to pay for anything. Which is cool, but at the same time, I find myself passing on actually paying for things I would love to see that don't come right down the street for free

yes the livenation/TM monopoly is horrible in every way and never should have been allowed to happen. But, the artists are in bed with them and all the way under the covers snuggling.

if the colluded market between the venue and the ticket seller for a show is $X.XX then so be it. Let the market decide whether that’s a good price by actually offering the inventory at that price/prices

not really, its why i dont do the festivals anymore. too much money to go stand in dirt and be a million miles from the stage. Plus the cost of everything inside being outrageous too.

$750 isn't face value. the problem is that the tickets are listed for $80, ticketmaster then freezes the sale after they sell a certain % then the rest of the tickets go to their partner secondary sites like stubhub where they will jack the prices up for sought after tickets.
they are all in cahoots with each other and the ONLY way to honestly defeat it is for TM/livenation to be broken up.
the 2nd method is to sell physical tickets only. NIN figured this out 5 years ago.

Maybe some musicians are at fault but these corporations like Live Nation that have a monopoly on ticket sales and control the venues are charging musicians for all sorts of crap that never came out of a bands pocket. This forces ticket prices up and most of that extra cost is lining the pockets of Live Nation.
