Cutworms have been eating the leaves off of my tomato plants. They even ate half of two tomatoes. Whats the best approach to control them? Hopefully there's a non pesticide approach. Ive read that Sevin dust will work but it's my understanding that it's not good for honey bees. Any suggestions?

Go out at night with a light and look at the top of the plants limbs. They will be easy to see. Pick and kill.

Spray Liquid Sevin. Just avoid spraying when the bees are active.

Or if you want to go with a more organic approach spray spinosad and bT.

Link to "How to Spot and Get Rid of Tomato Hornworms in the Garden." LINK

Other than hand picking off and killing tomato hornworms I could see from the tomato plants, I've sometimes used a garden hose with a nozel in a wide spray setting that wouldn't damage the plant but was sufficient to cause the hornworms to lose their grip on the plant and fall to the ground where I could see them and easily kill them by hand.

Killing hornworms by hand is hard to beat. It's organic and cost nothing!

One of life’s great pleasures is stomping hornworms once you have found them! The key to finding them is to look for their shite. That’s right, look for some little pellets on the ground and you will find them directly above it!

Black light at night. They glow

Not much beats cutting them in half with pruners!

I agree with the previous poster. You have hornworms not cutworms. Cutworms cut the plant in half down near the ground. They wrap around the main stem and feed on it until plant falls over. I had a problem with them earlier this year. I spray liquid Eight on mine for hornworms.

Cutworms usually just cuts the plants when plants are just put out. If talking about hornworms use Dipel dust. Soon as the touch it they will be dead shortly

My dads a bee keeper, I just came to say if you just have a handful of tomato plants I wouldn’t worry about bees personally. Maybe you’ll get a couple bees but not likely many. I should ask him I suppose but in all my years of gardening I’ve never noticed many honey bees in the tomato’s, but I’ve never really looked to be honest.

Worrying about bees is more for larger operations than just. Backyard garden.

Bifenthrin 7.9% Mix 2-3 tsp per gal of water. Spray entire garden once a week.

Ive 5 rows of top-pick purplehull peas, 2 rows tomatoes, 2 rows straight yellow squash, 2 rows spaghetti squash, 1 row of okra, 2 rows watermelons, and you will be hard pressed to find any bug in my garden.

Do you spray the tomato plants or just the soil?

Spray the plants. If having cutworm issues. Put a pinch or two of hi yield garden and livestock dust around the base of plants. I do this when setting out my plants like tomatoes, peppers, etc.
