Chip Roy: DeSantis Has A Tougher Border Security Record Than Trump. Here Are The Receipts

When DeSantis was in Congress voting for strong border security bills, President Trump was pressuring conservatives to support mass amnesty.
quote:
Indeed, in the only — and last — major legislative border security battle during his time in Congress, DeSantis did the right thing by our border states; he voted against mass amnesty and voted with conservatives for a bill commonly known as “Goodlatte 1.”
quote:
However, Goodlatte 1 was being blocked by Speaker Paul Ryan and the Republican establishment in favor of a second so-called compromise bill known as “Goodlatte 2,” which included $5 billion less in wall funding, merely shifted the visas in the visa lottery program to the merit-based program, and most disturbingly, included actual amnesty — a path to citizenship for potentially 2 million people.
quote:
In response to the “leadership” push to replace “Goodlatte 1” with the amnesty of “Goodlatte 2,” Ron DeSantis and other members of the House Freedom Caucus held up “must pass” legislation to demand a vote on Goodlatte 1. Thus, leadership was forced to put both bills on the floor. And what did DeSantis do? He voted for the strong bill with 192 other members of the House. That legislation only failed because 30 mostly establishment Republicans joined hand-in-hand with Nancy Pelosi and open-border Democrats to defeat it.
Then when the Goodlatte 2 amnesty approach was brought to the floor, DeSantis rightfully opposed this bill, which failed overwhelmingly with only 121 votes.
quote:
Opposing Goodlatte 2 should have been easy for every Republican in Congress, but it wasn’t. This is because on the morning of the June 27 vote, President Trump tweeted out at 7:39 a.m. in ALL CAPS that, “HOUSE REPUBLICANS SHOULD PASS THE STRONG BUT FAIR IMMIGRATION BILL, KNOWN AS GOODLATTE II, IN THEIR AFTERNOON VOTE TODAY…”
President Trump’s pressure campaign to force conservatives to support mass amnesty ultimately didn’t work, and Trump found himself trying to downplay his support for that bill to prevent anyone picking apart his narrative on border security.
quote:
They are even claiming DeSantis “voted against the wall” because he voted no with 89 other Republicans on Trump’s $1.3 trillion “omnibus” package that included only $1.5 billion for border security and “the wall.” But what they aren’t saying is even Trump, who ultimately signed the bill into law, threatened to veto the bill over — not the massive cost — but the very lack of wall funding and not enough amnesty for undocumented immigrants.
quote:
Trump tweeted: “I am considering a VETO of the Omnibus Spending Bill based on the fact that the 800,000 plus DACA recipients have been totally abandoned by the Democrats (not even mentioned in Bill) and the BORDER WALL, which is desperately needed for our National Defense, is not fully funded.”
It seems amnesty was part of Trump’s “border security” plan the entire time.
quote:
Don’t be fooled into thinking Trump never pushed for mass amnesty, and don’t be fooled into thinking DeSantis did.
quote:
But do not mistake those successes for the kind of resolve necessary to fully get the job done. The former president failed to move strong border security legislation through Congress because he picked the wrong horses, like Paul Ryan, to ride into battle alongside.
Those are the facts. No amount of name-calling and denials can change the truth.

To blame a president for these decisions is purely a political fulcrum to denigrate a political opponent, all the while putting obstacles in the way to prevent illegal immigration enforcement.

I'll just assume you didn't read the OP.

Does the President get a vote in the Speaker of the House selection?

I love Chip and he's not wrong here.
DeSantis is fine and technically probably better.
But that alone doesn't win elections these days.

The president has plenty of power. Trump could have lobbied congress for a wall. Instead he put an open borders, Koch brothers employee, Marc Short on the case. Stop pretending like the president is powerless. You guys spent four years doing that.

The legislature stopped building the wall, stopped deporting illegals, and stopped enforcing immigration laws.
DHS falls under the Executive branch. If deportations stopped it was because of Trump. The legislature isn't in charge of enforcing the laws, the Chief Executive is.
quote:
The power of the Executive Branch is vested in the President of the United States, who also acts as head of state and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. The President is responsible for implementing and enforcing the laws written by Congress and, to that end, appoints the heads of the federal agencies, including the Cabinet.

Nobody claimed that he did. But Trump was in fact highly influential. He wasn't a powerless President. He just chose to wield that power in a backwards way.

Trump endorsed swamp creature Paul Ryan for Speaker, which turned out to be a huge mistake. No Wall, No Obamacare repeal, No pro-2A. I was the only member of the GOP to vote against Paul Ryan, but there was no chance to defeat him once Trump endorsed him.

Ehhh. He had a learning curve. He'd never held office of any kind.
I sort of dug it in a way. I'd like more opportunities to vote for people like that for President. I actually found a lot of it refreshing. Sadly, a lot of people have done a lot to ensure I'll likely never legitimately get that opportunity for anyone else.
I have a difficult time blaming him for Paul Ryan and a lot of his collogues in Congress being shitheads.

Ron flies illegals first class into the country. You dont need anymore receipts than that

At that time, I can understand giving amnesty to those here already. There here, allow them to be legal and move forward. Good luck with trying to round them up, use those resources to address securing the border and being able to concentrate your efforts on that.

I will always love the argument that Trump is simultaneously leading the "America First" fight, but also completely impotent to affect the changes he's sold you on.

"Trump is the only candidate who can get the job done"
"I don't know why you guys think Trump has any power whatsoever as President. Y'all are so dumb LOLOLOLOLO"

No doubt he would do some things different 2nd time around. After experiencing 4 years of being president(having never been involved in politics)then spending time away thinking about what he could have done differently provides him with a unique advantage about how to better navigate and get things done. I know some don't agree but Trump is still standing after EVERYTHING thrown his way, he isn't stupid and would be going in knowing exactly what to expect.

Just ignoring the fact Trump ran on the opposite.

They're absolutely correct on the impotent part.

You missed the point completely

No one was thinking of border security until Trump came along . No one was thinking of trade policies until Trump came along . Everything that is the Republican Party platform is because of Trump having the balls to implement common sense policies everyday Americans see as the problem .
