Baton Rouge's Demise - We're Losing the USS Kidd (temporarily)

The river's been down lower than it has been historically," Stephenson said. "So, she's spending more and more time out of the water. We're experiencing breaches in the hull, which are flooding."
The Kidd, which normally floats on the Mississippi River, currently sits on its out of water supports while the river is low. With that happening more often, those supports are taking on more weight and experiencing damage.

For the much-needed repairs and historical renovations, it's predicted the U.S.S. Kidd is headed down the Mississippi to New Orleans dry dock for roughly $6.3 million in renovations.
"We have not yet picked the shipyard," Stephenson said. "There's going to be a competition for it, but it will be some place south that can accommodate a ship that size [and] do the work on an 80-year-old technology."
With the major attraction gone, Stephenson says he's already thinking of ways to continue bringing in guests.

That's disappointing to hear. Hopefully it comes back soon.

They better put full time armed guards on it before somebody tries to jack it or it turns into a homeless shelter.

Ever notice it's global warming in the summer and climate change in the winter?

I was in 4th grade when I sat on the levee watching the tugs pull it up the river to its current location. I remembered doing a “report” on it in school that year as well.
That would put it coming here in ‘83 or ‘84

Honestly that was my first thought. They're gonna move it and that fricker is going to fall to pieces. Then it'll be hundreds of thousands of dollars to get it back into museum shape and this city and state are broke as frick.
I never thought the Kidd would leave BR for good before I did.

Would like to see it in Drydock, seeing the Texas in Drydock is superb.

I heard a diver went down there back in the day and saw a catfish that could swallow a Toyota Corolla.

They need to an on doubling that cost and double the down time

Probably see it better with the water low than in a dry dock.

I’m going to guess that $6.3m is not going to cover the repair bill.

Sad indeed. Don’t sit on the red toilet seat!
