I'll be visiting my cousin for Thanksgiving and she lives a little over an hour from Napa. I've never been and would like to plan a day trip. Any recommendations?

You can only scratch the surface on a day trip. I’d say hire a driver, ideally a service that could also get you in to some of the places you might not be able to access on your own. Hit a few tastings, eat a nice meal. Now, how you get back to your cousin, I have no idea.

Where does our cousin live? San Francisco and Sacramento are both a bit over an hour's drive to Napa, but offer very different experiences.

Keep in mind you won’t actually be in Napa if you want to visit wineries. You’ll want to be as far north as St Helena.

For a day from Lincoln, which is a decent drive to Napa Valley, I would hit up the Silverado Trail wineries and enjoy it. You can get a good feel for the Valley by going to several wineries along the trail.

Way over hyped and waste of money. Many good wine regions.

Decent haul from Sac to Napa town and Valley. The town is ok, nothing great. Just drive North up the valley, hit a few tastings and eat a nice meal or two. Many places will let you go in and just buy a bottle and sit there and drink, not necessarily do a tasting. Depends on what you like. Yountville has a great small street with shops, restaurants etc…. Bouchand Bakery is good.

You’re thinking of Napa town. St Helena, Calistoga, etc are all in the Napa Valley, both the County and AVA.

Pick a winery or 3 you want to go to. If you’re not staying in Napa I wouldn’t do more than 2. They do arrest for DUIs down there.

Pick two wineries that interest you. Maybe closer to Rutherford and St Helena since there are a ton closeby in that area.

Maybe lunch at Gott’s Roadside St Helena.

Napa itself is not overhyped. It’s absolutely one of the most beautiful places I have been to (although maybe not as much in November).

It is way overpriced though

Will report back when I go in October.

For wineries I'm going to Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, Darioushh, and Pride Mountain in 1 day. Altamura on my second day before we go back to SF to sightsee

Not wine country. But Lake Tahoe is only a little further and one of the prettiest places in CA IMHO.

If coming from Sacramento are, I would just bypass Napa downtown in general. Go taste in the northern part of the Valley, especially around Calistoga. There’s some amazing wines up there. Some of our favorites are Phifer Pavitt, Kelly Fleming, Davis Estates, Brian Arden, Tamber Bey, Venge, Olabisi, and Theorum. Howell Mountain has some great wines too. Some are Outpost, Spence, and Cimmarosa. DM me if you want more info about any of these.

There is little between Lincoln and Sonoma except U. Cal Davis. A little research might find you something interesting to visit there. If time allows past through Napa and go on to Sonoma. Jack London State Park is the author's estate and a nice non-vineyard stop. Have lunch off the town square at LaSallet LINK

Then hit Napa vineyards and go home.

Subtle “I know how to work on my own vehicle” brag noted.

Seriously, the Napa Wine Train (Link) is a good time.
