UAW doesn't have a reasonable argument.
They are unskilled labor.
They don't "deserve" shite.
Corporations have to return money to shareholders, invest for future, etc in good times.
These morons are seriously bitching about dividends being paid. Who's going to invest in an established company without some dividends?
The UAW has no concept of how economics works.

No one has mentioned on the news that the UAW does have a profit sharing plan. Sooo they do indeed get to participate in the profits.

Big 3 probably not too concerned yet about the strike. They were about to hit oversupply in most of their inventory if they haven't already. But unlike other manufacturers they had to continue to build regardless.
Eventually inventory levels will fall, but does give them decent excuse not to lower prices for now.

They don't. The old agreement brought in new employees at somewhere around $18/hr then quickly moved them up to around $32/hr within 4 years. This did not take into account OT nor other bonuses.
The gist of what they currently want is a 36% increase for all UAW workers (down from 40%) and a move to a 32-hour work week (read: more OT).
As others have pointed out, this is right as the industry is trying to transition to EVs and EVs require fewer workers.
Along with that, car prices have jumped ridiculously, meaning car sales have started dropping off and are likely to drop further as consumers hit their debt limits due to trying to maintain their lifestyles on the backs of their credit cards.
Add into that we may well be heading into a serious recession within the next 6-10 months and it becomes apparent that not only are their demands ludicrous, but that they are doing it at probably one of the worst times for them.
There's absolutely nothing "reasonable" about any of that.

Big 3 should just move all manufacturing to Mexico. “The good news is, we’re not going to underpay union workers anymore. That bad news, we’re not going to pay them anything at all.”

UAW is digging their own graves. This is going to increase production in Mexico and automated production domestically. Their demands are accelerating the transition to all robot builders, and the harder they push the faster that transition happens.
With what they're asking for currently their job pool will shrink 50% within a decade.

Manufacturers will require less labor to produce those next gen EVs.
If demand for the labor goes down, what should happen to the price of labor?
OR price could stay the same with less laborers.

I honestly don't understand their argument around no more tiers...
If I've been with the company 10yrs and make X, why the hell would I want someone coming off the street to make the same money?
Unless I'm not understanding their tiers

To be fair, trading stocks doesn’t impact a company and I doubt the automakers need to sell additional shares.

they are trying to get money while they can. They see the writing on the wall.

Would the UAW ever cross the climate activists and claim that EV money for themselves?
Absolutely! Lefties always eat their own. They only care about being paid now, not one shite is seriously given about EVs or climate change.

Why don't they cancel their contracts and hire non union labor? Most of the work is done by robots anyway.

20% optics and 80% huge logistical headaches. It would cost them less long term to make whatever bargain that lasts a few years and then aggressively plan a hard pivot at the end of the next agreement.

Unions have always been about dragging down the best workers to the worst workers and then protecting the worst workers as much as possible. It's communism/socialism at it's best.
Take away the power/bargaining from the best workers so the worst workers can get what they want.

Yep. Unions are communistic. All workers are equal.
*Although, when the railroads were battling to reduce crew sizes and eliminate a bunch of archaic arbitraries they did get the conductors to agree to a new hire pay scale where the FNGs started at 80% and got 5% per year.
The engineers didn't go for that, so a brand new engineer made the same as a guy with 30 years.

Labor laws. Companies can't just flip a switch and say they're no longer union.

I would have locked them out the minute the first picket went up. Drain the UAW's warchest in a hurry instead of this pussyfooting around.
Optics would be terrible of course.
