The Sony Pulse and Inzone headsets seem to be the "go to" options.
Check them out at PlayStation Direct:

is he looking for something with good microphone capabilities or simply headphones to sync up with the ps5?
Might be a stupid question but I got the sony ps5 pulse headset strictly for the headphones. I don't need or use the microphone. I would simply use my airpods if they were compatible, however the sound through the pulse set is really good. I pick up on shite I normally wouldn't otherwise through the TV. One the few occasions I've used the mic I've never had complaints from my buddies.

My wife and I both use Arctis 7P+ and do not have any complaints.

I'll add a positive review for anything Steelseries. I have the Arctis 9x for Xbox, and it is the most comfortable headset I've ever owned, with pretty damn good audio quality. They can be a tad pricey, especially for a pre-teen, but if they will take care of it, it will be a sound investment.
SWIDT?

I’ve got the Arctic Pro Wireless and love it.
