Been catching a few Western mud snakes lately…we got 17 in the past 5 nights. Best night was Monday - me & my buddy got 6 in 29 minutes. Love is in the air this month so they’re on the move. 4 Friday, (skipped Saturday), 4 Sunday, 6 Monday, 3 Tuesday.

Gorgeous animal.
I found my first one in south Louisiana when I was 10 or so. I had no idea what I was looking at until I went back to my room and checked out my trusty LDWF poster:
Red bellied mud snake down here.

I’ve always thought those looked really cool, how’s their temperament? Are they as prone to bite as a lot of water snakes? Most of the water snakes near me in Tennessee are dicks. Love your threads.

There was a man in the 70s who the school would bring to speak named Kelly Falcon. The “snake man” of Louisiana.
You are the new snake man.

They don’t bite, ever.
They’re very unique in their behavior. They tuck their head against their body and lash out like striking but don’t open their mouth. They curl up their tail to give you that flash of red, and sometimes flip over to show their belly - because in nature flashy colors often represent danger. When you pick them up they almost always musk you but have a unique almost “sweet” smell to their musk. And they love to poke you with that point on their tail.
Just an awesome snake, but almost impossible to keep as a pet because they pretty much only eat amphiumas.

Among the names I remember from herpetology. Farancia abacura.

Having been born and raised in Australia, even tho I know these are harnless, it blows my mind seeing people handling snakes that colour so carefree. We've got one similar (black back, solid red belly) back home, but being Australia, naturally it's venomous

Do you find them in swamp/marshy areas? I want to find one this weekend.

Yes - they pretty much only eat amphiumas, so they usually hang out in swampy areas. If there’s an a swampy area with a road running through it, they are easier to cruise up on the road than to hike up in the swamp. You want to road cruise them right at dark. And May is the best time because they are mating, so they are on the move.

Have you ever seen or caught an Eastern Diamond Back in LA?
Posted on 5/25/24 at 5:13 pm to Da Sheik
Nope, only caught one personally in Florida.
A friend gets some in Mississippi but I don't really herp there.
