I think I want to give this a try for deer. I am not looking to spend more than 1K for a set up. What is important? What should I avoid? A clean a kill as possible is important to me. I pass shots with the rifle I am not comfortable with.

TenPoint Venom X and then practice a lot.

(I'm not an expert, though.)

Not that long ago the first comment regarding a crossbow would have included one of three things: meth, spotlighting, or handicap status.....

I guess a sincere response is considered progress?

Not much to it. Put a scope on it and consistently kill deer at 70 yards.

Bear Intense Crossbow

The Bear Intense was my first X-bow. Ready-to-hunt package under $500. Tight at 50 yds. Easy and quiet in the stand. Easily punches all the way through, deer run no more than 30yds.

My experience is, it's basically a single shot rifle. You can spend less than 500 on one and be good to go. I shot a friends Barnett and that thing had the best trigger I've ever touched & I have several name brand two stage triggers.

Not a meth head and certainly don't spotlight deer. I have never hunted with any kind of archery so feel like I might be a bit disabled I am one of those snobs that never uses live bait so I get the hate.

Bump your budget up some and fork out for a Ravin. It's worth it. Best on the market and manufactured in Louisiana fwiw.

My dad got one when he was in his 70's and killed a few deer with it. I shot it at heads of lettuce when I was in my 40's. It was deadly from 20-30 yards without a scope.
Shooting it was fun.

He's in his early 90's now and I doubt he knows where it is. I'm 65 now. I may go look for it, and get some targets to shoot in the back yard.

I bought a used barnett hyperghost 425 2 yrs ago.

Ive shot at 5 deer and killed them all.

There are plenty if options in your price range. Just like with vertical bows the bigger argument you will have with yourself is what broadheads to shoot.

CenterPoint Amped 425 Crossbow

I purchased a CenterPoint Sniper 370 several years ago 238.00 delivered.
Once you get use to the ten mile pull of the trigger it's "dead-on."

My cousin hunts with a crossbow. She kills her limit before rifle season even starts. She has a Barnett. I have an Excalibur. Love it.

I have a Barnett TS380 like NIB I’ll sell you. It’s ready to go. I have a case for it and put an upgraded scope on it.
