Tipping Fishing Guide?

I will be going on a guided crappie fishing trip in a few days at Truman Lake in Missouri. Do I tip the guide and if so how much?

20% unless he’s a dickhead or doesn’t put forth effort. If they/he cleans fish and does a good job I might go higher whether that cost is included or not. Most I’ve been around will not show their arse if someone doesn’t know to tip but it is generally expected if they work to put you on fish.

20% if they put you on fish
10% if they don't
0% if they are a dick and you don't catch anything which is unlikely

Bring $200 in $20 bills and keep them in your shirt pocket. Every time one of the crew does something that annoys you, throw one in the prop wash. This includes playing a Morgan Wallen song on the sound system. They get whatever is leftover at the end of the trip.

Lots of Morgan Wallen bots in this thread.

Should be purely your discretion but I think 100-200 is plenty fair enough for most non-offshore fishing trips.

The first few times I took guided trips I had no clue they expected a tip and nobody told me a thing until I read it on thread here.
Growing up we were poor, I didn't step foot on a boat with a motor until I was well into my adult hood and could afford to spend $500-$600 on a trip (back 15 years ago) until I was an adult so I had no clue there was an expectation.
All that said, a guide never even mentioned I should have tipped... and honestly, if they own the boat and set their own prices I don't see the point of a tip. Now a deckhand on an offshore boat is a different story, or a guide working for an outfit that doesn't set the pricing.

He has his own boat and he has been catching his limit everyday sometimes twice a day. He charges $300 for two for four hours. He has LiveScope and he cleans, filets them (I think) and puts the fish in ziplock bags. If we catch our limit of 15 per person in the allocated time and he has time he will catch his 15 and give them to us also.

Let me know how this goes. Live in KC area and would love to go catch a mess of crappie. I've heard that tear them up at Lake Truman and Clinton is only about an hour from my house.

How much is your trip and how long and how many people?

I staying at a COE RV park on Truman Lake until 6/11. Report back how it went, I may want to hire the same guide.
I usually tip $100 for 1/2 day trip.

Tipping is meant to be subjective based on your experience. But the general rule is if good trip somewhere around 20%
So a $60 tip does the job. But if y’all catch and he cleans them all I’d just slip him a $100 and call it a good day.

I'd tip him $50 in that case.

I see it as a little bit of flexibility in allowing the customer to acknowledge when things don’t go to plan but the guide doesn’t let it ruin the trip. If they just aren’t biting and he burns a lot of extra fuel to scrape out fish, my tip will reflect that. I would also expect folks who get more hands on instruction, or break off a lot and require him to tie rigs all day, etc to tip a little more.
Bottom line, if the variable costs are priced in, he’d need to charge every customer for the most expensive day. Some probably do, but that leads to complaining about how expensive it’s gotten.

This. I never try to tip the captain anymore. Just the deckhand. I assume the tip is built into the price for the captain/owner.
When we lived in Miami. We'd fish out of Islamorada quite often with Dirty Boat Charter (Captain Kit Carson... which is about as good a cowboy name as one can have).
Our first trip was an $800 trip for the kids. I just wanted to catch a lot of fish and let them have fun.
We slayed yellow tails. But, it was hot as shite. One kid got a bit heat sick. Two got sea sick. But, all had fun.
I gave Kit 100 for the deckhand. Tried to give him 100 as well, but he refused it. Said we had 3 sick kids. And didn't get the action we normally get. He gave us all free Dirty Boat charter fishing shirts and swag, gave us a voucher for a free half day trip, ($800 value), and comped our dinner at Robbies (the dock restaurant where they cook all the fish you caught). All of that for a day we LIMITED out, but he and the deckhand just thought it could've been better.
Great outfit.
Used the half day to offset a full day sailfish trip. I caught the first one about 70lbs. Kids had 3 on at once. Much smaller, but all 3 landed with no cut lines. Caught 7 sailfish total on an 8 hour trip.
Amazing day. Deckhand got $500 tip.
Kit got a high five and bro hug.
All were happy

yea, pretty spot on. I did almost 5,000 charter trips and I would say that is pretty close. Most of my trips were full day trips and I was charging $400 a day for two people. For the most part, I would get anywhere from $50-$100. I had guys tip me over $200 and plenty of guys who tip nothing. I honestly dont think most of the refrained from tipping because of the trip but mostly because they just didnt know it was a thing. I made my living on return trips so as long as guys kept coming, I didnt mind.
Its a service industry. If you had a good trip and the guy was pleasant and did a good job, a tip is very appreciated.
