I am getting some trigger work done on a shotgun by a gunsmith in Houston and I need to ship the gun to him. I’ve never shipped a gun before.

Should I put it in a normal travel gun case and put a mailing label on the case?

Or just find an old gun box and ship in that?

Any advice or help would be appreciated,

Oof. Man, I’d find a closer gunsmith. A lot can go wrong having that many minimum wage folks handling your firearm.

Do you need to ship the whole gun? Seems like you could knock the roll pins out and just ship the trigger mechanism…

take it to a shipping place and they’ll wrap it and box it for you. Goes without saying make triple sure it’s not loaded

UPS and FEDEX changed their rules in shipping guns last August. You have to have a firearms shipping account with them now. Best way to ship is to have your local FFL ship. What I do now is go on UPS website and get a shipping label. Bring it to the FFL and have them ship it. Your FFL probably has a gun box laying around they will give you.

You can always say its something else other than a gun but if it gets stolen, lost or damaged insurance won’t pay.

Had this conversation a few weeks ago.
You have to ship ffl to ffl.
You can get the shipping label, but your ffl has to ship. There is paperwork with your ffl’s ATF number associated to the firearm. And same with returning ffl.
I would suggest going to ATF website and getting familiar with their regs on shipping.
I hope this helps

You shouldn't have to ship via FFL if it's for repairs. Not saying FedEx or UPS will accept it though. I have no idea.

Have shipped 5 times in the original gray plastic Benelli case put inside a carboard box using FedEx and UPS.

Have never been asked whether there was a gun in the package. Declared it in the description without using the word gun. "Benelli 12g SBE 2" for example.

I shipped a 1911 to Nighthawk Custom for some work. I spoke with the custom shop manager and he said bring it to FedEx and ship directly to him. I did as he instructed and FedEx had no issue.

Similarly I am guessing whoever is fixing his gun can offer OP the best advice as well.

FedEx

Nope. My last firearm shipped via them was signature required. They couldn't produce the signature or proof of delivery. It unfortunately coincided with my ffl getting sick and not being in the store for a few days. 3 days of not knowing where your AR is is not a great feeling. Their customer service was absolute dog shite and not even remotely understanding why something like that is highly worrisome.

I called the FFL that I have used for any purchases/transfers for the last 10 years when I had to ship a gun back to Winchester for warranty work. They informed me I could ship it from wherever but Winchester would not send it back unless it was an FFL. The day came that i was able to pick up my shotgun and I was caught by total surprise when I had to fill out a transfer form just like I was purchasing the gun. I thought for sure it would just be a pick up since it was already my gun. The paperwork wasn't an issue and it was no charge I just wasn't expecting that to be the process.

ask the gunsmith how many days he needs to fix it?
drive there for a mini vacation, get it fixed, drive home.
