Can the refusal of cash money be considered discriminatory?

I have always thought dollars issued by the US Treasury to be an accepted form of payment. Yesterday, I ran into several instances of cash not being accepted.
If that is not payment discrimination, what is?
If theft concerns are the driving force, chopping off hands works very well in many countries to eliminate such behavior.

There is no law that requires a private business to accept cash or coins. The "legal tender" phrase refers to the U.S. Dollar, which is also reflected in credit cards, checks, etc.

I think if they have a way to exchange cash it would be that is one thing, but not sure they can outright deny you using cash.
Most concert venues/sporting events I've been to in recent years have been cash-free.

Some businesses only take cash.

What CAN’T be considered discriminatory when you’re the right color or sexual identity?

No. Stop being stupid and get a debit card like an adult.

No, but it can usually steer you towards who’s cheating on their taxes.

So I go into one store and payment is declined on card. Go into another store and payment is accepted on the very same card.
In the past cash was not ever declined. Now one has to wonder the problems a card might present especially during a crisis.

I agree with you. It's bullshite.
However, I would imagine that during an actual crisis these companies would switch to accepting cash pretty quick, for their own benefit.

Some people don't have bank accounts but do have cash. Not accepting cash for payment is considered discriminatory.
quote:
“Prohibiting cash payments is an act of discrimination against the millions of Americans who do not have bank accounts or prefer cash,” said Senator Cramer in a press release from his office on June 23, 2022. “It also forces customers to exclusively use a less secure form of payment. The Payment Choice Act protects people’s right to participate in the economy using their preferred form of payment. If businesses unilaterally stop accepting cash, why do we print money? Is it really legal tender for all debts as it says?” said Senator Cramer.

They do not have to utilize cash but I believe they are hurting sales. Also when I have had to be told that no cash my next words are is there a charge for using debit or credit cards. If so I’m out of there as I’m not paying the service fee just to get a smoothie or something

The dropoff from lost sales for not taking cash is likely far less of a cost from the overhead with not dealing with cash.

Correct. People confuse the "legal tender" reference as some sort of federal requirement to accept cash.

It is considered discriminatory in the eyes of one senator in a press release. This is like taking AOC's word as fact.
That being said, it can't be that much longer until someone from an impacted group wins a lawsuit that legally defines this as discriminatory.
