Byron Kennedy died suddenly in 1983. He was George Miller's co-producer on the first two Mad Max films and said to be one of the major influences on the design and story of those two films.
If you notice, after Road Warrior and Mad Max, the franchise becomes much more cartoonish and bizarre over the more terrifying, dark and nihilistic tone of the first two.
That could have just been to make the films more "commercial" since the studio gave Miller such a massively bigger budget for Thunder Dome. Maybe he thought he needed to make the film more family friendly to make a profit.
Whatever the reason, the entire second half of Thunder Dome and the kids shite is just terrible. And I'm the biggest Mad Max apologist around. The first half though is fine. I actually liked Tina Turner in her part, even as unbelievable as it were that she would take over/run a wasteland town.

She was the best part. :I found her role actually interesting compared to the rest of the movie. I agree with OP, it took the franchise from nihilistic post-apocalypse to....
Which paved the way for Fury Road ((which was kinda pure cartoon....Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote)....But I digress. Thunder Dome is not bad, just corny and reshaped the franchise.

I have never watched this movie and never will. The Road Warrior was the peak.

I think it's mostly the time span between films, the advancements in FX and the fact that Thunderdome had a much larger budget. And it was progressive between the three. Mad Max is basically a grindhouse movie. The Road Warrior is just as much of a leap ahead of it as Thunderdome is to The Road Warrior. And Fury Road was a quantum leap ahead of Thuinderdome.

I have never watched this movie
There was nothing new about a death match in the future. We saw one in Escape From New York. in 1981.

Miami Vice happened
People started flocking movies and TV with pop appeal. Thats how you get Tina Turner and her song in a lead role

i thought the backwards mardi gras head on max with hands tied to the horse banned to the desert was pretty disturbing as a youngster.

I remember when Freeze was coach at Ole Miss and someone posted a picture of Blaster with his helmet knocked off and how they look alike. I haven't been able to unsee that since.

In the long long ago Tina Turner acting was a big deal and so the movie was bigger. So we tells the tale....damn forgot the rest.

Gibson's hair style was terrible. Definite 80's vibe to it.

The Evil Dead series kind of makes the same progression.
