“ the question is, who is the most accomplished player without a major”
Under age 40 after playing in 20 majors.

Cantlay? The consensus pick
Fleetwood?
Fowler?
Hovland?
Finau?

Homa?
Horshel?

Zalotoris?? Has he played in 20?

Kucher? Probably done

Montgomery, Westwood, Donald? In their time

I'd say Hovland if he would stop fricking with his swing

Hovland or Cantlay

Cantlay has 8 tour wins and a fed ex cup

Probably Cantlay. A bunch of wins, high up in the rankings for a while now, and has knocked on the door of every major at some point since he's been on tour.

I read an interview where he said it knows it fricks him up but he cant stop .

He's always tinkered constantly.

Cantlay is the most accomplished player without a major. And his major record is terrible. He has a total of 2 top 5's in 31 major appearances.

Aberg is probably playing the best right now compared to everyone else without a major. But he's accomplished way less than Hovland and Cantlay have.

So does Billy Horschel.

I'd say the best player without a major is Ludvig. Datagolf backs that up. Plus I don't like Cantlay.

The argument can only really be made for Aberg if you're going off of "who is playing the best right now." As good as he is and as high as his ceiling is, he's only won one time on tour, nobody has been waiting for years for him to win one. Resume needs to be factored in.

Just because he's only been a pro for 14 months doesn't preclude him from being the best player without a major.

It kind of does given that he's only one once

If you want to give him the "currently highest ranked golfer without a major" or "player who is playing the best golf without a major" title that is fine. But if the world ended today, Cantlay would be the guy who has put together the best record/resume without winning a major. I'm not really a Cantlay fan, but he is a great golfer. And at one point was #3 in the world, technically higher than Aberg has been, though that could change before too long.

Dunlap? Aberg?

I think there needs to be a minimum number of majors played before you qualify for lists like this. Aberg and especially Dunlap don’t really belong IMO.

Cantlay and Finau are the obvious answers that come to my mind.

Good thought.

20 majors played as a floor?

Unless they drop off due to current relevance, Kuchar should have won a major.

Kuchar has 9 career wins, including:
Players Championship
WGC Match Play
Memorial Tournament

Kuchar also won the bronze medal at the Olympics.

Career earnings of over $58MM and at the end of the 2023 season he was the highest career earning PGA player without a major win.

I would still say it’s Rickie Fowler even tho he hasn’t been great the last few years. But he has finished 2nd in every major except the PGA which he finished as high as 3rd. He has 12 top 10s in majors including 9 top 5s. In 2014 he finished top 5 in every major without a win. Hard to believe he hasn’t won one.

Current great player? Cantlay

All time?
Lee Westwood
He spent 160 weeks in the top 10 World Rankings

and his record in Majors?
three runner-ups, twelve top fives.

Why would it be him? The guy has one career win, injured all last year and has been awful this year. Highest he ever got in the world rankings was 7th and he's currently 57th.

If the question is, who is the most accomplished player without a major, then Cantlay belongs near the top of that list.

IMO, Ludvig is a better player than Cantlay, both right now, and going forward.

A lot of people were upset that Scottie Scheffler got a captain's pick for the 2021 Ryder Cup. He hadn't won yet and others believed there were better players to select. I think that's how we will look back on Aberg in a few years.
