People who talk over other people

Do some people not have the instinct to stop their sentence when other people are talking, or when two people start talking at the same time and one of them need to stop talking to listen to the other? I work with two guys who do this and when they are together they will both be trying to talk over each other for for 10-15 seconds straight and it baffles me. Does this come from ego and thinking what you have to say is more important than others?

They're called narcissists. They either cut you off or talk over you because thier words are more important. I had a buddies wife who was like this....the entire friend group has stopped inviting them places because of it

Why not ask them to stop? Then again maybe going to an anonymous message board and writing vaguely about it may get better results.

Not supporting either one over the other, but the Secretary of State held his own against Ted Cruz, and that takes some doing. Like two chihuahuas fighting over a bone.

I used to find myself doing it when I was younger, mostly in situations where I knew where the other person was going in their statement and I was already replying.
I've tried to work hard at not doing it

There definitely is a lack of self control in it

I’ve noticed a diminishing in conversational etiquette for years. Talking over others is common, but the big one is interrupting. I’m going to blame the usual culprits here.

I had a tendency to interrupt people from time to time when my thoughts got ahead of me. Ive worked on improving myself in that manner and rarely do it any more.
I try not to judge other people when they do it because it doesnt always mean they are a jerk.

I only do it at Afters, but everyone does it at Afters, and its hella fun.

There's one guy at work who will start talking in circles and repeating himself because he doesn't know how to finish a thought, so if you don't cut him off at some point, he'll pass out. I cut him off all the time and have no problem talking over him and asserting my dominance. It is necessary.

Wait until you meet a sentence finisher.

My wife gets in me about interrupting. Once she hung out with some of my friends and met my mother, she realized that if you didn’t interrupt, you’d get sucked into one of the longest and most boring conversations ever.
If a person often gets spoken over, one need ask themself whether they’re too verbose.

My dad and uncle would do this. For a good 5-8 seconds they’d both be rolling.
It taught me how not to have a conversation with others.

My wife’s family is bad about this. Drives me nuts sometimes

People who only want to have a one sided conversation.
After a while of no pauses in their stories, my mind will definitely drift and I begin thinking of ways to get away. Sometimes I get self conscious and wonder if they know I’m not paying attention anymore.

My daughter in law and sister in law. It’s funny as hell to watch them hold a conversation. Currently we are in the cycle of sister in law not talking to anyone????. That will last a few months. Rinse and repeat

I'm a painter. It's just not in me to miss a detail. Just cut me off, I'll get the message.

Zoom/Remote meetings has contributed substantially to this trend rising.
Small delays makes it worse.
