Purchasing a used truck

So I haven’t bought a vehicle in 25 years. From what I understand, there are better ways these days to purchase what you are looking for as opposed to walking into a dealership blind. What tips do you guys have? Got my mind made up on a used Toyota Tacoma with low miles. Plan on using it for a couple years the giving it to my son. I got excellent credit and plan on putting down $10K. TIA

Forgot to mention I live in Nashville

What year are you looking for, this might be an exercise in frustration. A lot of lightly used Tacoma are basically same price a new.
Use websites like cargurus and caredge to shop around get an idea on pricing. Costco can also be a good option in the right market. Unsure on Nashville, just have to try it out
A lot of the old methods really work now as car sales have basically slowed to a trickle. Except on high demand vehicles such as a used Tacoma. New Tacomas are everywhere though as people don't like the new design. However they are not cheap by any stretch

Look on internet and get prices. I used CoPilot to compare vehicles. It’s an app. I knew exactly what I was looking for and the price range. It helped a lot.

I used a website called CarEdge and paid $10/month for their reports. It easily paid for itself. Just bought new vehicle yesterday (one I found 80 miles away through their search engine).
Used Tacomas probably aren’t much cheaper than brand new.

Compare rates and don't totally rule out new. I bought a truck this weekend, and after comparing rates it was the same price over the term of the loan to buy new as it was a low mileage one or two year old model. Hated financing at all, but the rate was too good not to finance.
Edit:
I also used CarEdge, but I think it's $20/month.

I think they raised prices this month
The used market is tough right now. There just isn’t a big delta between new and used prices. I bought new. They offered $750 rebate for me to finance it through them. I’m paying off the entire note on Monday.

With dealer rebates, special % rates, and other rebates it might be better to buy new.

I went with a used Tacoma to get the 6 cylinder but everybody is right about the new vs. used prices. Not much difference.

That's awesome man. I don't know how long you've been at that point in life where you can buy a new vehicle and pay it off pretty quick but it's a good feeling. I'm almost at that point myself. Bought a truck in January this year and it'll be paid off by the end of the year. I financed $40,000 ($20k down) and the minimum payment is $805 for 5 years. I don't know how people are able to do that on smaller incomes.

2023 (and older) Tacoma = 6 cylinder
2024 Tacoma = 4 cylinder + turbo
2024 Tacoma = 4 cylinder + turbo

So the little bit I researched over the weekend I found 2 used ones. 2023 with 4k and 46k miles. Wanted $27K and 29k. New ones are around $40k up. I probably won’t put but about 35 k miles on it the 2 years I will have it. Plan on putting down about $10k on whatever vehicle I do get. I have an 2014 Camry with 198k miles on it I will be selling. One owner

Word to the wise: get a Carfax report.

Do not get a new 4 cylinder with turbo Tacoma. They are literally going through a recall right now for engine replacements.

To be fair the tundra has the engine recall which affects the six cylinder only.
The Tacoma I think has a rear axle recall

I got offered $24.3k at a Toyota dealership for my 2017 AWD Pilot with just over 66k miles. It has a 6 speed transmission and and I showed the guy it was getting just under 26 mpg over the last 8.8k miles with a lot of mountain driving and 70 - 80mph driving. They don't have the Land Cruiser I want and it's better for me to trade to reduce NM gross receipts tax on a purchase. That cash is tempting though, going to try a bigger dealer Wednesday.
I don't think vehicle prices are going down anytime soon, like years. That stupid arse side airbag recall last Thursday kept me from getting a new Grand Highlander MAX hybrid, Toyota is having a shite year with all the bungling of new builds. The Toyota dealer in Santa Fe stacked a $5k Dealer fee on a $70k Land Cruiser, so $75k + GRT and I laughed and said I would take my business to ABQ. What a F head.

Vehicle prices have been on a downward trend since January 2022.
