New movie from Jeremy Saulnier director of Blue Ruin and Green Room.

Willing to give this one a shot. Blue Ruin and Green Room were both awesome. And I loved this movie the first time I saw it, when it was called Walking Tall.

1. Netflix
2. "Rebel"
3. frick whitey
That is the MTV board trifecta, there will be lots of jizz spilled over this movie by the soys on this board.

I thought Blue Ruin was a pretty good movie. This trailer looks like it will be good too. Obviously it’s not a new story, battling corrupt cops in a small town.
As others have mentioned, the fact that the protagonist is black, the main antagonist appears to be white, and the world Rebel is in the title may serve as a bat signal to both flavors of the poli-cessed to show up and complain.

I also wonder if the title is purposefully trying to echo the Ruby Ridge standoff. Maybe that's too obscure, but it's the first thing I thought of.

This project started in February of 2020 in New Orleans and went through three different production periods to finally get made, so I’m happy they even released it. Probably ended up costing 80m after all of that. I was on the Covid killing version and Netflix paid us for 12 weeks after the film shut down, which was a respectable gesture and not the studio norm at the time.
Some eye rolling dialogue at times, but I’m sure the action sequences will carry it enough.

Is this where I act outraged that crooked cops get their arse beat just because they're white? Or only because a black dude kicks their arse instead of an Italian like First Blood?
Will watch.
Will watch.

A bit surprised, but the early reviews are positive .... will watch.

Overwhelmingly positive so far. Looks like it’s at 95% with 21 reviews. People really hate civil asset forfeiture.

Out today. Might check it out tonight before/after the game.

Only 30 minutes in. But it doesn't seem like the lazy racism movie. Just crooked cops F'ing with an honest man. Think First Blood with a southern twist.

I think I have hunted in a lot of the area where this movie was shot.
But in the movie they kind of make it ambiguous where they are. Because they say counties sometimes, then one or two times I’ve heard them say parish. Then one time I heard the main character say I need to get out of this Alabama town.

It wasn't bad, though I found the ending a bit anticlimactic. You could certainly project your own biases and assumptions onto it, but I don't recall any overt racism from anyone in the movie, including the bad cops. Weirdly refreshing for a movie set in the deep south with a black protagonist.
ETA - Don Johnson should be in more movies. He's always good.

Ah. Okay. That's all I need to know about where this one is headed.

Did anybody else notice the exceptional use of mirrors through the movie? I feel like a lot of time was spent adjusting mirrors for the perfect shot. Even without the mirrors, the camerawork was outstanding.
I read that John Boyega was originally cast to play the lead and I’m glad that didn’t work out. He’s a good actor, but he wouldn’t be believable in this role after he let Viola Davis look tougher than him in that woman king movie.
Anybody skipping this because they think it’s woke is missing out. The only political statement it’s trying to make is that civil asset forfeiture is unconstitutional. There were maybe two scenes of clear exposition regarding forfeiture which were probably the cheesiest part.
Also, the best part:

It started off great but it drug-on and got boring. I thought the ending was ok but in the scenario of the movie I would have liked some final answers. It was ok for a Netflix movie but it was probably 30 minutes to long.

bullshite movie from the get go, white cops are bad, innocent black guy riding a bike gets ran over and accosted. Steals the guys money who’s bringing his cash to bail his cousin out for marijuana arrest.
No wonder this country is so divided. Typical race baiting bullshite from Netflix…
