History channel is missing a golden opportunity, dove hunting produces more redneck drama in south MS than a deer ever dreamed of. All of them buy chops, anonymously rat each other out, and the ones that don’t get busted opening morning post on fb about how they killed over the limit, such that green jeans shows up for the evening hunt. Everyone swears revenge on the house of whoever turned him in. Hilarious to sit back and watch.

Yup. I know of one guy around Brookhaven who went and dumped a bunch of wheat in his neighbor's dove field then reported him for baiting.

“possessing untagged doves“

I haven’t dove hunted in La in 30 years. Do y’all tag them over there?

In Texas we put them in a bucket.

A whole bunch of effort went into this, over a damn dove, which if not killed continues on it’s migration to central or South America and are killed by the millions as crop nuisance

Arkansas has implemented a new app for buying licenses, that is horribly glitchy. You can still buy on a pc as well. My buddy is a barge captain who got in on opening day and got an invite to the next morning. Long story short he tried to buy the license on the drive to the field and it wouldn't work. He spent all morning trying and finally got it to work midway through the game warden writing the ticket. Yay technology

They don’t need to be tagged unless they are not in your possession. If you leave your birds with someone else then you have to tag them with your information.

I haven't looked at the regs on that in a long time, so I'm not sure when one has to do it. I guess if they are commingled?

There is a LOT of truth in this. Dove mortality in the first year is almost identical in states where they are hunted and states where they are protected. IF people spent the numbers of days in the field shooting dove that they do hunting deer and ducks baiting and shooting over the limit would seriously impact the population. About 90% of people who shoot dove on opening day spend about 8-10 hours a SEASON shooting dove....its almost completely over after the first day and by the second weekend of the season almost no one is shooting dove. By the time deer season opens the number of hours spent in the field shooting doves is miniscule. I have had this conversation with game biologists in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, South Carolina, New Mexico, Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Everyone of them agreed that given the lack of pressure on dove outside of opening day there is no reason to have a limit or prohibit baiting. It is not about managing the resource it is about managing public perception. Almost all hunters universally agree that baiting is unethical but many do bait deer and it is allowed. The practice of adding water to grain to attract ducks is encouraged....there is not a lot of difference in that and adding grain to water.

I suspect most dove shooters have shot dove over a baited field either knowingly or unwittingly. It is very common as we all know. Given that most of us shoot dove 2-3 times a year and only for 3-4 hours each outing and many of us are doing it over baited fields, again knowingly or unwittingly, the idea that baiting negatively impacts dove populations is not based in reality. If we spent 60 days in the field and 8-10 hours a day it would. The number of people who do that are miniscule. 60% of all dove die any given year whether they are heavily pressured by hunting or not. The best baited field will fail to attract birds if it is heavily hunted....they will find quieter areas to feed. It is unlikely that were baiting to become the norm the mortality rate would increase....it is regulated to manage public perception, not the population.

Thats probably the case. My dad and I got ticketed on a trout stream once for comingling fish in a common cooler. The limit was 7 each and we had 10. Both of us were ticketed for being over the limit because they were not in our individual possession. Case was dismissed because there was no requirement in Georgia that they be kept in individual possession. Still ruined a good day fishing and cost us a day in court. Would have paid a fine without going to court, wasn't an option.
