For me that is peak zone. The whole round I didn’t think about anything except where do I want to try and put my ball.
Which got me wondering, how the hell do people go lower!!! lol
I mean I felt like I didn’t everything right.
Golf is a wild wild ride

Well, you are so close to 79 that needs to be your new goal.

For me a few years ago getting from mid 80s to sub 80s was keeping the tee shot in play

Keeping it in play and not fricking up par 3's really went a long way for me..
ETA: Also would like to add confidence aka mental game is huge .
Example I played twice this weekend...
Saturday: Belle Terre in LaPlace I shot an 88 I've never seen the course before not overly difficult but I was overthinking shite and making bad shots but didn't feel I played overly horrible..
Today I played my home course Pelican Point and shot a 79 and felt like I left a lot out there..
It's a weird game..

When I watch guys who are better than me what I notice is they can save scores better than I can. They can hit a poor shot and still make par a large percentage of the time. It takes them basically 2 poor shots to make a bogey. It takes me only 1. That’s the biggest thing, and a lot of it is wedge play and lag putts.

Avoiding doubles>making birdies.
Most players potential is related to driving distance. Once you get good at putting a driver(or any tee shot) in play, you can score if you have a nice short game and putting.
I believe the very best players separate themselves with ball striking.
My 2025 goals are:
1. to get 7 yards longer with driver,
2. To get 4 yards longer with irons. That’s 11 yards so over the course of a season, I’ll turn some 8 irons into 9 irons. Some 6 irons into 7 irons.
3. Become a great putter.
4. Manage my game better

i would be happy with that score and have been stuck in the 80s for a long, long time

I think you forgot perhaps the most important improvement area. Good golfers can consistently get up and down at about a 75% rate. Your other improvement
Areas are great but short game wedge play is essential for quality golf scores.

This. Turning those doubles into bogeys will really start to lower your scores.
On Friday, I shot a 78 (+6) with 3 doubles on the card. Kicking myself because I played the other 15 holes at even par. If I make bogey instead of double on those 3 holes, I shoot 75.

i live and die by this. i've gotten to the point where i use my 3w about 95% of the time, simply to keep me in play. yes, i may have 170 in vs 155/150 but i'm ok with that. keeping it in the fairway i have confidence with my irons to get on or just off but close.
its my shots at or inside 100 and long arse putts that kill me. i was birdie putts on 3 of 4 par 5's recently. par'd 1 bogeyed 2....yes, all birdie putts were 35-40ft, and there is where i struggle. inside of 20ft i can do well, outside of 30ft its like 50/50 if i lag a good putt. and thats why i stay in the mid 80's. i drive and hit irons well enough to score low 80's and maybe even do a driveby on a high 70's, but i have to get better at the 100yd on in and long putting.

Good point.
5. Become better from 15 to 50 yards.

Absolutely.. I hate shots under 100 yards .. can't tell you how many times I've hit an absolute nuke of a driver and have a 50-60 yard shot in and duffed the shite out of it..

Played Coppermill on Sunday. Course was packed so paired up with and older gentleman and his 30 something year old son on the first tee. They said they were not good and they wanted to play from the green tees. I normally play from the coppers, but I thought what the heck., it will help me build confidence if i shoot well. Playing from the forward tees changes that course up. Granted its not the hardest course out there but I had to use woods off the tee and keep the driver in the bag on alot of holes. Ended up shooting an 82 and could have been sub 80 except for a few mistakes off the tee. Having them two take 2-3 shots to get to my drive helped me slow down and focus on the next shot. Really enjoyed myself.

For me, the mid-80s was when I found the effort to score equilibrium. Smart play, few errant drives, and decent chipping and putting got me there. To lower my scores will take a serious commitment to fix my shitty iron play and take my short game to the next level and frankly its just not worth the effort for me. I'm better than 80% of golfers and I'm just good enough to avoid the most fun sucking aspects of golf for me, bad drives and terrible chipping.
