When's the last time a guy listed as doubtful ended up starting and finishing the whole game ,in any sport?

It doesn’t happen much at all, but Pels upgrading him means that he has practiced, needs one more and he will be questionable, then play against the Nets.

Yes, this is the normal pattern when someone is coming back from a long-term injury: list the player as doubtful the game before the game they expect him to play. Listing Trey as doubtful for tonight means that, barring any setback, he should play Monday.

In addition, the fact that we play tonight and then not until Monday means that the team should have a full practice to work on reincorporating Trey.
