I’m in the 7th day of sobriety and have been having vivid nightmares. Is this normal?

Are you on any medications? How much were you drinking?

Yes. Especially the first 6 months.
When you get sober it’s common to have drinking dreams. We call them freebies. Enjoy the overwhelming gratitude once you wake up and realize it was a dream.

They’ll eventually stop.

It happened to me. The dreams were vivid as all hell. A couple of times I woke up and couldn't remember if it was a dream or really happened.

When I gave up drinking for Lent last year, in about the third week I noticed the sleep I got was magical. Push through to that point if you are serious about it and the quality of sleep will improve.

For 6 months or longer perfectly normal.

Also, bodies react in weird ways. Some people gorge on ice cream daily and lose weight. Some people have balls of wax falling out of their ears. Just to name a few other things that happen.

Yes it's pretty normal. On my bouts of sobriety, I'd have very vivid dreams of being in situations where I would normally be drinking and there not being any alcohol around. I would be actively looking for a way to sneak booze in or leaving the situation to go get alcohol.

This would happen a few times a week. I wouldn't call them nightmares but just reoccurring very vivid and detailed dreams. Oh and night sweats when you first sober up suck complete arse too

You’re getting REM sleep, which is the stage you dream in the sleep cycle.

Alcohol crushes all REM.

If I don’t drink, I dream. If I drink, I sleep horribly and don’t dream.

I still have drinking dreams occasionally but now, even in my dreams, I know that I should be sober.

For instance, I dreamed that I got caught a bar trying to order a drink by my brother in law and my entire family was mad at me because I ruined our vacation.

The dreams where I’m actively drunk have finally ended after 8 years sober.

I had the most vivid night terrors waking up to demons in my room. Glad that has passed.
