My pellet smoker died on me, so I am in the market for a new smoker. I am a cheapskate, so I am intrigued by the price of the propane smokers. (I also like the portability.) Some reviewers say they can tell by the taste that it was done by propane. Has anyone here used one and can compare the flavor experience between a pellet smoker and a propane smoker?

I've had this Dyna Glo 2 burner propane smoker for about 5 1/2 years. Works well for me. Fill the tray with wood chips and I get plenty of smoke. Takes a little practice to determine how high to open up the burners to get a constant temp, but once you do, it's easy.

I've never owned a pellet grill, so I can't compare to one of those. This one is much less work than a stick burner, which means I end up using it more often.

Not a purpose-built propane smoker, but I have smoked a lot of ribs on my Weber Spirit propane grill.

You have to turn one of the heat diffusers (weber calls them "flavorizer bars") on it's side, over the burner on one side, load it up with wood chunks of your choosing, I like hickory on ribs with some occasional fruit wood. Put ribs on the other side. Only run the burner under the wood side, on low, not the meat side. The wood gets cooking and smokes the meat just fine, but I do recommend soaking the chunks first, so they smolder instead of bursting into flame and getting the grill waaaay too hot.

You might not win Memphis in May, but it will make some good ribs.

A baw had one at a hunting camp I was in back in the day. It smoked about the same as an electric heating element smoker with the wood chips and water pan. Not Aaron Franklin Q by any means but not bad. Very easy

Let me add something else, that might just be a "me" thing.

On my old offset stick burner, I made very much good bbq. But I started waking up in the middle of the night to chug Pepto bismol.

Once I downsized to the propane grill for completley different reasons, I noticed the BBQ I would smoke on it (using method outlined above) did not wake me up in the night to chug pepto.

I'm convinced I'm allergic to charcoal smoke. When I smoke with just propane and wood, no sickness.

I'm prepared for the downvotes.

My first smoker was a propane smoker and it worked fine. The issue I had was trying to prevent the chips from catching fire.

Been using a camp chef box smoker for years. Once you get it dialed in it stays consistent. Haven gotten a pellet smoker because there are too no’s that can break. I also don’t like th fact you have to go through pellets the whole time to keep the heat.

I’ve had one of these for going on 8 years. Will buy another when this one gives up the ghost.

I use blocks instead of chips. They last longer and not as easily to blaze up.

I’ve got one. This is a good summary.
