Looking for recommendations for gun safe dehumidifiers that don't require a power source. I've heard about silica crystals that can be put into the oven or the dehumidifiers that can be recharged by plugging in.

What says the Outdoor Board? Much appreciated.

Unnecessary in a climate controlled environment.

I had some of the plug in ones. In like 10 years I think I've recharged them once or twice. It sounds like a good idea, but I never remember.

I bought the Hornady but just put it in my safe Saturday.

Pretty simple just plug it in to dry it out and then put it back in the safe. I think is the crystals are pink then you plug it in and then they turn back blue or some shite like that.

Plug in

Similar to what Rize is describing. I’ve been running this one in my safe in my garage for about 3 years now, no issues. Needs to be “recharged” every 4 or 5 months.

Dessicant packs are fine. Oven bakable ones are cheap and easy assuming you actually bake them out every now and then.

I have heard rumors of excessively dry gun safes causing issues with old wood stocks, but I never have had or directly known anyone who has had the issue.

I have a laminated stock I noticed now has dry spots I didn’t recall seeing before and I wonder if that was the cause. I am running a dehumidifier.

I just got a larger safe and ordered the Hornady dehumidifier mentioned above, too.

Not sure what your situation is but we have our safe in an air conditioned camp and without a dehumidifier it gets very swampy in there.

I have on of the plug in ones someone linked above. Plug it in overnight and then its good for a few months.

Have this. Also have a Bluetooth hygrometer in there. I don’t notice any difference when I charge it vs don’t on the hygrometer. I’m sure I need more units to truly have an affect on my 36 gun safe. But I shoot my guns regularly and keep them oiled up when I don’t. Just don’t worry about it all that much.

Yeah I have a Golden Rod in my safe at the house and it’s always fine but at my little camp house we use window units and turn them off when I leave so there’s more concern there.

I snagged a $20 plugin rechargeable one from Academy.

I'll report back after a while.

Reporting back. Not sure if successful or not, but I just recharged it. The beads had not fully transitioned from dry to wet, but I opened it to grab something and noticed the change in colors. Probably 75-80% transitioned. Recharged it bc it was right in front of me and I didn't want to forget.

Because of this thread, I got a few oven rechargeable bags off of Amazon. I never noticed a difference with just the plug in Hornady one. I'm seeing the numbers go down on my hygrometer significantly now. I'm sure the winter weather helps too(it's in my garage that;s well insulated, but not conditioned).
