I’ve seen a lot of critters on my place in South Texas but this is a new one.
So far over the years I’ve seen Axis, Fallow, Black Buck, Nilgai, Oryx, and Dall Sheep.
This is a cam I’ve got sitting on a pile of Nilgai shite.

Way cool. You need to make a run back out there.

Looks like a water buck.
That’s probably what it is. Doubt I will ever see and it was probably just passing through.

So in Texas all these different species are just running around? I’m genuinely curious

It depends on where you are in Texas but the Hill country and South Texas have lots of free range exotics.
I have a low fence ranch that bought a bunch of animals and turned them loose a few years ago and some ended up on my place. The Nilgai have been there for a long time and I see them a lot. All the other critters are just pure luck if I see them. There is small herds of black buck and axis that have been around for years but I only see them every few years.
I’m on a lease in Junction area and we have Aoudad, Axis, and Sika at our feeders daily.

Yeah it’s pretty cool that you never now what could walk out of the woods when hunting down there.

Yes, just depends where you are. In the hill country where there are high fence ranches everywhere there have been some get out and establish a solid herd. The most abundant is the Axis. My dad and BIL have each killed Axis in their back yards in New Braunfels.

My son shot a black buck in West Texas last year. We see Axis, Fallow and tons of elk. I killed an elk this year. Not high fence, but escapees from high fence property that have established small herds.

Common Red Lechwe
Common exotic on many Texas ranches. Haven’t seen waterbuck on exotic ranches before but I am sure someone has them.

Water buck. They say the meat is oily! Make a pretty mount though!
