Oven cleaning

I prefer not to use the self-cleaning oven feature that my oven has. I remember my mom doing this, and the results were subpar, it took forever, and it heated up the entire kitchen and areas around it.
I've used 409, and let it sit for over 2 hours (as recommended) for hard stains. It's better, but it's not what I consider "clean."
What methods do you guys/gals recommend? Steam? I ask, because I have a portable steamer and am willing to try it. Vinegar works extremely well on stainless steel --- would it be the same for this? Should I be concerned about the inside finish of the oven becoming damaged?
Lastly, for the racks, what about blasting the pressure washer on them? Any down side to this?

This. May take a few applications depending on how bad your oven is.
We also use one of those non-stick plastic coverings for the bottom of the oven to keep it cleaner. It helps a lot.

Just get a good size can of Easy Off Oven Cleaner in the yellow can. They have a "Low Fume" one in a blue and white can cut it doesn't work near as well as the yellow can stuff.
Turn the oven on and let it get warm-----to about 170 or so, remove the racks and spray the inside of the oven and door. Let the cleaner sit for several minutes and then use one of those green scrubber pads to scrub down the surfaces. Follow that with a damp rag and rinse and repeat until it is all clean.
Last of all, use a clean towel to wipe everything down to remove any residue and then put the racks back in.
I don't use gloves, but my hands are pretty rough to begin with, but it wouldn't hurt to use them just to be safe if you're not sure.
And yeah, it does smell and can get a cough or two especially when spraying the warm oven.
Forgot to mention: I too have a steam cleaner and it was more trouble than just using the Easy Off. It tended to smear the build up in the oven from when the wife did chicken wings and her daughter did jalapeno poppers that got grease burned on all over the interior.

If you don't let the oven get too dirty in between cleanings, the blue can of Easy Off will work for light to medium build up.
I cleaned mine with the blue can before it got too bad, and had no problems, but you are right about the yellow can being more effective.

10% ammonia will knock it all loose. Mix it with some dawn and let it soak a while.

I purchased the yellow can of Easy Off Oven Cleaner. I warmed the oven to 170, then turned it off. Sprayed the oven cleaner, set off my carbon monoxide detectors.
Opened the doors to let it air out. Using gloves and a face mask is highly reommended. I let the product sit for about 30 minutes. Used a green scrubber pad. Then use a wet rag, rinsed it out several times, and then followed up with a clean wet rag.
Here is the result. Note, this is my top oven, and it was filthy. I wish I had taken a before picture. The bottom oven, I'll tackle next, but it should be easy. I'll also get to cleaning the racks as well, but may do this outside.
I'm a believer in the yellow can.

Easy Off has been my go-to for ages and works better than anything else I've tried to use to clean a dirty oven.
I have a steam cleaner and it just pushed the filth around after melting some of the hard residue in the oven.
My wife cooked greasy stuff back to back in it over a 3 day period. She first did a couple dozen jalapeno poppers wrapped in bacon that tend to splatter grease as they cook, then did 10 lbs. of chicken wings using cooling racks over pans at 450 degrees and they too popped a lot of grease inside the oven.
I was not a happy camper when I saw the mess but knew it was doable with the cleaner and some elbow grease. Should have had her clean it, but as soon as that spray is released she starts choking like it's tear gas.

No, not on the interior of the oven surfaces or the door glass. I've been cleaning ovens using scorch brite pads for years and the finish in my oven is like new once it's cleaned of grease and grime.

You could use Mr Clean Magic Eraser but crusties would chew it up quickly.

For the caked on stains that were on the glass, I used a straight edge knife and they came right up.
All that is left to tackle are the racks. I'll get to that later this week once I fire up my pressure washer.
