I never really followed recriting back then as much as the actual football. I know he was a great recruiter, but what were his classes ranked????
how many of the players that we pulled this year would he have gotten???
ford
lacy
davenport
randle
sentimore
jackson
downs
faulk
claiborne
sentimore
johns
barrow
bell
jones
I know his recruiting classes were not as good as the post saban era. But did he ever have a top 10 class???? just curious. Can't find any rankings that far back.

I believe he had some pretty good classes. Don't remember the rankings though.

He had some good classes, he could recruit. Needed more work in the HC'ing part.

it's impossiable to say who he would have got in '09. i know that he did keep some serious la talent in state (ie faulk collins mealy) but i don't think we were top 10 back then.

I don't think there were too many "rankings" done at that time. Rivals and Scout are relatively new. ESPN rankings is only in its second or third year.
From what I've gathered, Dinardo signed a lot of talent, but they either couldn't qualify or stay qualified.

his classes were okay, but nothing like what we get now....the last several years have been easily tops in the history of the university...
before Saban and Miles, we typically got no national recruits...mostlyin-state 3 stars with a few 4 stars....
think ole miss/miss st type classes....

We definitely would have signed Lacy, Sentimore, and Tahj Jones. Dinardo signed lots of guys who wouldn't qualify academically.
Back in the mid-90s, recruiting rankings were much more subjective. There were guys like Tom Lemming, but it wasn't as organized or thorough as Rivals or Scout. I would guess that we would usually ranked between 10 and 20 every year, probably closer to 10.

agreed...the main difference was that the internet just hadn't been developed...there wasn't nearly the flow of information that we have now....heck, there weren't but a couple of sports channels on tv....

Mike Archer before him, the same story.

I think saban walked into a decent situation is something i am thinking
I would not be happy with a top 20 class now but back then it was a milestone. Man how far we have come.

If I remember correctly there were guys like Lemming, Emfinger etc.....regional guys who rated recruits, but its nothing like it is now. The regional guys rankings varied wildly if I remember correctly.

Trivia Question:
You know who the grandfather of recruiting was?
They had a # of services. Max Emfinger, G&W, Lemmings, Allen Wallace, etc. Bill King out of Nashville was in partners with another guy and had a recruiting service. They were just getting started. Pro draft was coming into age, Orlands Guide and Mel Kipper were just getting started.
I've been following this for a # of years and have some of the old books from years ago.

Max on Emmitt
quote:
''Emmitt Smith isn't big or fast and he can't get around the corner,'' Emfinger wrote last February. ''I know all the folks in Pensacola will be screaming and all the Florida fans will be writing me nasty letters, but Emmitt Smith is not a franchise player. He's a lugger, not a runner. The sportswriters blew him out of proportion. When he falls flat on his face at Florida, remember where you heard it first.''

Shame of it is, Dad, Emfinger was 99.9875% right.
There was NOTHING impressive about Emmitt other than he racked up massive yards and scored a gazillion points.
That slow, feet low to the ground, shuffle.... and nobody would lay a hand on him.
How many piles did he pop out of and you sat there yelling at the field, "come on!!! tackle that dude!!!!!!!!!".
Emmitt made alot of money out of that .0175%!!
