Chinese search giant Baidu has said it will make its Ernie generative AI large language model open source on June 30, a threat to OpenAI, Anthropic and its own Chinese rival DeepSeek.
Tech experts are divided. Some say it won’t be another “DeepSeek” moment for the U.S. market, while others say Ernie’s release could cement China’s position as the undisputed AI leader.
“This isn’t just a China story. Every time a major lab open-sources a powerful model, it raises the bar for the entire industry,” Sean Ren, associate professor of Computer Science at the University of Southern California and Samsung’s AI Researcher of the Year, told CNBC.
Not sure what to think other than AI is getting cheap and competive.
Could this be a market mover like DeepSeek?

Thanks.
I was thinking at one point in the DeekSeek fiasco the thought was they were using a much cheaper chip than those produced by NVDA.

I asked this on another board, but if power is as/more important in a way than the tech and compute, how are we even a serious competitor against China as they perpetually reverse engineer everything we produce. The currently have 8 nuclear facilities under construction and average a coal plant going online a week. I think we have 3 nuke plants in permit stages unless im mistaken

This is a huge issue that has been overlooked until recently. Trump already has one executive order to combat this, allowing for expedited nuclear permit reviews and some other ways to expedite the process of bringing small modular reactors into our grid. He’s supposed to have another soon that’s more focused on expanding the existing electrical grid as well. We have some time to catch up / keep up, but not long if we don’t do something

Ernie is easily the worst name for a major LLM yet

As mentioned- this is a fairly big deal in the overall AI landscape and on more relatable terms, This is akin to Costco releasing their Kirkland brand.
