Hours after dropping bait into the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday morning, anglers Trey Linder and Steve Callaway hauled in an 11-foot-8-inch tiger shark off Pensacola's West End Beach.

They tagged the shark for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research, then posed with the slick-skinned predator, prying open its jaws to reveal its rows of comb-shaped teeth before releasing it back into the water.

The whole process, which started at 5 a.m., took about three minutes, the anglers wrote in a Facebook post, adding that "experience is key."

If there's any time of year anglers are likely to catch a tiger shark, it's now — summer is when coastal sharks come closer inland in search of warmer waters to give birth, NOAA shark biologist John Carlson said last year.

Tiger sharks are the third most commonly caught coastal shark in the United States, according to the Florida Museum. In the Gulf, they are the most common shark species found in both coastal and offshore waters.

The species can grow up to 18 feet in length and weigh as much as 2,000 pounds, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Yes there are plenty of Tigers in the Gulf, but this doesn’t sound right.

Protip: when releasing these magnificent beasts, slide a 1/4-3/8" pointed metal dowel rod 2" behind and just above the left or right eyes. This will ensure it dies within a few hours of release.

Yeah, big tigers get 14 - 15 feet, almost a ton (ETA: females are the bigger ones ). That was a mid-sized tiger.

tatted up, roid addled Chad wearing a flat billed cap that says "Gym" is exactly the type I would expect fishing for sharks. From the beach.

Brings to mind way back in the olden days when I had to do work offshore, I was standing up top watching over the rails and a huge hammerhead shark broke the surface. It was in South Pass as I recall.

I also recall on a ride in to Venice in the front seat of a chopper seeing a very large manta ray break the surface. West Delta, I think. It was impressive. We were probably 700 feet up.

The twins were at least 12 feet long, they could take a 15-20 pound snapper in a single bait. I hated them.

The only seemed to want to take the huge snappers or AJs and only after you fought them for 20 minutes or more and finally had them beat.

Even the damn Makos that used to sit under a the boat were that big of a dick. They ate everything.
