Someone, somewhere on this board was asking about the latest book coming out soon from Jim Butcher. January 2026.

Hopefully he can get back on track. Butcher turning into Martin/Rothfuss lite and putting out Dresden books every 5-6 years has been extremely disappointing.

He's raised the stakes so high with the last few books, I don't think he thinks that a more normal story would be ok. With how powerful he's gotten, I'm not sure there's much else to expect. It's sad but at least Butcher is making progress.

Yeah it’s a bit frustrating his pacing now. I saw someone post a while back that he went through a nasty divorce. No idea if that’s true, but it would make sense.

While I agree it did escalate quickly, be does have a map in mind and it’s not inconsistent with the escalation: 21/22 case files and then an “apocalyptic trilogy” to close out the series.
Probably the most meaningful line in the past 2 books, beating out Justine quoting Nicodemous from very early in the series was “ Looking back, that was the moment everything started to change.”
Really interested to see how it plays out.

Also, they have been doing a lot of foreshadowing that he’s gonna break a glass ceiling soon and enter an entirely different order of magnitude of power and problems.
-Ethiunu (I’m sure I misspelled that) showing that all of these previous standards of incredible power (Mab, Odin, Eb, Tatiana, Erlking, etc) actually have multiple weight classes above them and they are starting to be more active.
-Outsiders playing a larger hand in openly trying to force the “empty night.” Remember, Harry and crew didn’t win in Battlegrounds. They just obtained the best outcome that was available to them. If Chicago fell, so much the better for the Outsiders, but even with repelling Corbs forces it just lays the foundation of the next stage of the plan.
-Increasing dialogue of the value and import of being a Star born, on BOTH sides of the conflict. Explicit statements that things are close to the “endgame”
-Implications that the Senior Council is fully aware of what is coming and has ideas of the role Harry should (or shouldn’t) play. This is likely why the Merlin is so anti-Harry, especially if he isn’t a member of the Black Council. (As an aside, I really hope he doesn’t turn out to be Cowl)
-Foreshadowing from Mab that Harry is on a path to being given the choice to turn immortal, a situation that Ebenezer is fully aware of and doesn’t want Harry to take.
I don’t think it’s fair to say that he wrote himself into a corner by having the stakes so high. He is clearly laying the foundations of something big. Wouldn’t be surprised if the next book or two is a bit of a step back breather.

Is this not the final book in the series?

No. The title to book 19 is already known too. It’ll be called Mirror, Mirror.

I thought there was two more. I may be wrong

I thought after these next couple of small ones he was going to write a trilogy to complete it, maybe I’m wrong though

I wanted to go back thru them, but i don't want to read about Murph again.

It was supposed to be 22 books and then the final trilogy after (so 25 books total). But that was pre Battleground I think. So not sure if Peace talks/Battleground being divided into two books changed that or not. Hopefully he gets his butt in gear and starts releasing them every 2 years again so we aren't worried about him not finishing the series, which wasn't something I think any of us would have been concerned with a decade ago.

Anyone have a good refresher video/article? Read a lot of books since the last Dresden files…

Just finished it. Not a ton of action, per se. But was nice to be in Harry's world, again.

Yeah, for the first 2/3s or so it was very slice of life, and I was like "we waited this long for this?". But the last 1/3 redeemed it, it finished extremely well.
It kinda reminded me a bit of a Beware of Chicken of novel, with random slice of life interspersed with random butt kicking. Just Harry dealing with trauma slice of life instead of the humorous slice of life of Beware of Chicken.
It's probably in the bottom 6-7 of the series, but still a solid book.
