Horrible movie adaptations of books

What books did you read, love, saw that they were making a movie out of it, and the movie sucked arse? I mean, like all the book and movie shared was the title of the book.
I'd have to go with The Sum of all Fears. Which really doesn't totally fit into my category, because it wasn't an awful movie, but I was definately dissappointed. And it wasn't because of Ben Affleck. The Sum of all Fears is my favorite Tom Clancy book. I read a lot of his books back in middle and high school. He is absolutely my favorite active author. I kept hoping for this movie to come out, and the only thing it shared with the book besides the title was that a nuke blew up at a football game in the U.S. I really thought that the actors did well actually, but I was dissappointed that my favorite TC book was so different.
This is the reason I haven't seen and refuse to watch Friday Night Lights. Because I loved the book and even though I haven't seen the movie it certainly looks like it has a lot of "director's discretion".

Sphere and Congo have to be up there.
I also did not like the why Pollack changed The Firm, though the film was not horrible

The Chamber by John Grisham
Great book, not a very good movie except for Gene Hackman played the villain perfect.
24 hours by Greg Iles
The movie was titled Trapped and was nothing compared to the book.

The Bonfire Of The Vanities
Tom Wolfe's brilliantly witty satire on Political Correctness was changed into a monument to Political Correctness.

What is weird about the Da Vinci Code was that they really did stay pretty accurate to the book as far as the chain of events that unfolded. But for some reason, the excitement that I had while flipping pages into the wee hours of the morning was lost in that movie. It was like, "why was the book so great again?"

The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy was a great noir thriller and was absolutely butchered on film. It almost offset the triumph that was LA Confidential, which I though was unfilmable but was a fantastic movie.
Rising Sun was also a good book that was turned into a PC piece of crap by Philip Kaufman.

It's certainly not the same as the book. It's not horrible though. It's just about football none of the racial problems or financial problems that the book mentions. By watching the movie you would think Odessa was a nice little town to live in.

The Other Boleyn Girl is one of my fave books...horrible movie!
This also leads me to question why Eric Bana is an employed actor. The only movie I can tolerate him in is Troy.

Winner.
I'll add The Cat in the Hat

Bana is a solid actor with some poor choices when it comes to roles. He was awesome in Chopper, the best thing about Troy and a great lead in Munich.

The Da Vinci Code
Also, I like Black Hawk Down, and I understand why they did this, but the movie is just completely lacking of the alternate perspective that the book provides.

The Lost World. Awesome Book, horrible movie.
Sahara. stil trying to figure out what that movie was about.
Battlefield Earth. Although I never read the book, movie was horrendous. Course, maybe the book is as well.

All the King's Men - the book was too good to be translated to film; Warren's commentary made the book what it was
I Am Legend - just read the book

A toss-up between Congo and Timeline.
The Serpent and the Rainbow gets an honorable mention, entertaining but ridiculously far removed from the true story that it was based on.
