I suspect our more seasoned members are well aware of this already, but I am 46 and was unaware until I listened to a 6 part podcast this past weekend

I kind of figured he was a Christian religious nut, but he later transformed into a commie and was not even really even a Christian later. He was a legit social justice warrior.

Darlings of the left loved the guy even though it was becoming clear things were very amiss.

Jane Fonda: "Jim Jones and his people are an inspiration to our efforts".

Harvey Milk: "Milk defended Jones against early accusations of abuse, calling him 'a man of the highest character' in a letter to President Carter"

Willie Brown and George Moscone. Met with Marilyn Carter as the campaign found him useful

He was an opportunist and knew it would be easier to recruit black parishioners that way

Jim Jones had no actual beliefs other than whatever benefited Jim Jones.

This is completely untrue. He was an opportunist. But he was a true believer according to this podcast.

Big time Marxist. However he was no different than today's liberals. He loved minorities, wanted segregation, hated white people, and killed a lot of people.

Naw. He chose specific religious styles that gave him the best ability to gain power and influence over larger groups of people.

Again, the socialism and integration stuff was a way to market to minorities to grow the congregation.

OP already said he was a leftist, not sure why you feel the need to keep belaboring the point.

Well that time in California
Oakland and everything that goes with it
The 60s Jesus Freak movement of the lake 60s and 70s which I've mentioned my dad's church was kinda between the bay arrea and Sacramento

There were numerous suspicious movements. Jim Jones was a better con man businessman than most but he also got out of the country when he knew he was gonna get investigated from some of the child and sex abuse

But I definitely remember the massacre and the killings I was visiting family in California when it happened
