Fast food restaurants all looking the same

Why do all these places look like an urgent care office all the sudden?
Wendy’s, Taco Bell, McDs, BK, etc
Cold, sterile, bland looking. They used to have some character and charm.
I realize the food is shitty. But sometimes if you are on a road trip with 4 screaming, hungry kids and on a budget and a time crunch… you just need to run thru a McDonalds.

They're easier and cheaper to build when they have no unique identifiable characteristics.
And also easier to unload later.

This and it is the modern style. Basic white women love it

If there was a market for fast food with restaurants painted like Pee Wee's playhouse, someone would build it and make a fortune.
When you just don't want to pay $20 for lunch, don't care about quality, and you have 10 minutes to get it, you DGAF what the walls look like.

The irony is built in to the structure.

Is that old Pizza-Hut-turned-single-family-housing still on Woodland Ridge?

Exactly. On those rare instances that I have to resort to fast food, I'm using the drive thru. Aesthetics aren't important at that point.

Its to make them easier to sell. I want to say that there are studies that show businesses that opened in an old fast food place.. Like Pizza Hutt.. Do do not as well. I don't remember the details, but its not good to open up a business in a building people will see and think of another business. So if they make it all look like blocks holds value.

Count the cars in drive thru lanes.
All of them are at Chick fil A.
Except for the ones who don’t have the time to wait in drive thru line at Chick fil A.

They all tried to move away from being "fast food" a few years back. They also got shite for trying to market to kids. Every one of them rebranded in some way. McDonald's used to heavily market Ronald McDonald and their characters until the trashy people started blaming evil corporations for making their kids fat instead of taking some personal responsibility.
I will say that whoever builds Wendy's and Chick Fil A's should get awards. Once construction starts they go from dirt to first order in less than 3 months.

It's all corporate and nothing has personality anymore. I quit going to McDonald's in the '80s when they stopped having dance offs in there.

Even with Ronald McDonald and other characters, when I was a kid it was a big deal to get McDonalds. We would have once, at the most, maybe two times a year as a family, then if we had to go to the doctor on school day, if time allowed we would get to go through the drive thru and eat it on the way back to school or something.
That's on the parents. Just because something is offered doesn't mean parents have to buy it. I get it, its easy, but so is putting some chicken breast in the over at 400 degrees for 25-30 mins and cooking instant mashed potatoes and making a salad. The problem is parents lack of planning.

No such thing, Chick Fil A drive throughs are quick as hell.

I like cold and sterile where I eat. Say no to nooks and crannies.

My pet peeve is the changing of the Sonic signage. It used to be easy to spot the black and yellow sign but now it's a washed out looking light blue and white. Who decided this was a good thing?

I have no idea but I noticed this too.
They seem to want to discourage people from going into their dining room by making the whole building less welcoming. The old 1990s style mansard roof or canopies that extend out into the sidewalk sort of brought the outside into the building. It also helped mask a box-shaped structure and helped it sort of blend in with their surroundings a little better, making their existence less objectionable and less likely to face opposition from locals.
The newer ones just have an abrupt, more severe feeling entrance and fewer windows. McDonalds is the worst offender although they seem to have the best landscaping among fast food chains in my area. I suspect they are trying to encourage more drive thru and less dining room patrons. Most newer stores seem to be on VERY busy intersections and commercial strips. Some are even in outparcels for Wal Mart or Target.
Chick Fil A still has a decent setup, but most of the newer stores got rid of the play lands....which is a frustration if you have a 5 year old. Otherwise they have a very good setup and a more welcoming design. A problem is their dual drive thrus and managing that. It's efficient but it takes a lot of real estate to do it properly, which means less parking to make space for drive thru lanes. The cars in the drive thru can sometimes wrap around the building; which is an undesirable architectural feature.
In N Out is also usually very good - often they may have have outdoor seating. Not sure if they'll retain that as they expand to wetter climates east of the Mississippi river.
My local Wendy's is kind of weird. They have that severe, unwelcoming look like all new Wendy's, but they also added a large outdoor seating area that works pretty well. Rare for a Wendy's. If only their food quality was better......

Well, there is a reason why they call it fast food, they’re not expecting customers to have a lavish dining experience or be sitting in their restaurant for long periods of time
