Making it to the National Championship Game without winning your conference...

This was a hot topic of conversation on this board 14 years ago. Prior to 2014 it had only happened twice in the Poll Era. Now that we have a playoff it seems to be happening more frequently (as one could have predicted).
2017 Alabama
2021 Georgia
2022 TCU
2024 Ohio State
2025 Miami

Almost like there’s a difference between a playoff field of 2 compared to 4 or 12

Conference championships mean almost nothing in this era
Conferences are too big so the championship is too dependent on favorable schedules and ridiculous 4- 5 team tiebreakers
And there's no actual reward for doing so. When a conference gets 4-5 bids, there's really no big coup for winning the title.
It's now like winning your conference championship in basketball. People celebrate it for a few days and then just start talking about the tournament and if you don't do well in the tournament nobody cares that you won your conference.

quote:to be clear there wasn’t a National Championship Game for most of the poll era. The BCS started in 1998 and the first Natty participant that didn’t win their conference was 2001 Nebraska. Also 2003 Oklahoma and 2011 Alabama. That’s 3 times just from 1998-2014 without even having a playoff.

I’m also not including 2012 Notre Dame who didn’t win their conference since they are not in one.

Conferences are too big currently and need to be shrunk or just abolished altogether. Winning a conference is meaningless if you don’t play all of the teams or substantially all.

Miami was a victim of the ACC’s convoluted tie-break rules.
You needed to use spreadsheets and have a couple of free hours to spend figuring it out. Somehow after all that data was compiled, the formula determined Duke was a better team than Miami.

Dumb post. Winning the SEC still means something.

quote:oh man it’s a whole lot. Only the SEC and Big 12 even had divisions and conference championship games in 1998. So the very first one Florida State. Then both Florida State and VTech in 1999. Then Florida State in 2000. Then both Miami and Nebraska in 2001. Then both Miami and Ohio State in 2002. You see how this goes?
Now do winning at least your own freaking' Division?

Whether it's 2 or 32, you want the best -- conference winners are not always the best teams. So simple a retarded ape understands this

quote:This means nothing. That’s not different than simply not winning your confercme when the conference winner was in your division.

And is the other national championship participant the current ACC Champion?
If not, then this situation with Miami is nothing like 2011.

Best is subjective
If you’re not the best out of 7, then you shouldn’t get a one off chance to be the best out of 100+ in a 2-team field
Very simple stuff
