Dear Facebook,

I grew up, and lived in south Mississippi, for the majority of my life. I relocated to the Ozarks 8 years ago, and it was the best decision I've ever made.

I was sitting here tonight and thinking about some of the things I don't miss and thought I'd list them here for shites and giggles. Obviously, some will only be relevant to me and my particular situation.

If you're thinking of moving, it may be the best thing you've ever done too.

1. Racism/other general hate
Just kidding, baws

1. Climate
I hate swamp arse, I hate high humidity. Give me 30 degrees any day over a heat index of 110 any day. It's nice to sit on the porch in July and not sweat. People actually eat outside here, and it's not a punishment.

2. Roads and general infrastructure
I'm always reminded around the holidays how bad the roads in Louisiana and Mississippi are when I come home to visit family. Frick. Also, there seem to be more leaning and dilapidated power poles in the South than in other states. The bridges suck.

3. Insurance costs
My relatives in Mississippi pay nearly double what I do for similar coverage on similar assets. I've heard Louisiana is even worse.

4. General trashiness
It seems like there's litter everywhere. I always forget how bad it is.

5. Hurricanes
Give me a tornado any day, at least they're relatively isolated in nature and the majority of them aren't THAT bad.

6. Lack of natural beauty
There are definitely pretty areas in the South, and plenty of natural beauty, but it's generally just flat, pine thickets. Ugly vegetation.

7. Mosquitoes
These should probably be higher on the list, but I almost forgot they exist

8. General traffic/busyness
This one is definitely just due to my situation, but it was nice to go from coastal Mississippi to a small, rural, Ozark town. Life seems a lot slower and simpler here. Less crazy drivers too.

9. Labor market
The general job market is just better, way more job opportunities IMO. I make triple now what I did my last year in Mississippi and the cost of living isn't that much higher.

10. Lovebugs
Frick 'em

Hell no, unless it's Celsius. I can tolerate 40s but not 30s if you're talking freedom units.

Yeah, none of that in R-Kansas or southern Misery

Tornado gives you 20 minutes advance notice. Hurricane gives you 2-3 days. And a lot of them aren't catastrophic. I've had a 1 and a 3 go directly over me.

We have beaches, cypress trees, and live oaks.

Fair point. I'd rather be cold than hot though. And having four seasons is nice.

The schools where I lived were decent and I don't have kids, so not a big deal to me. Corruption is everywhere.

My wife and I rode up to Branson for a few days last summer and on the ride up, we remarked over and over again how there were much fewer junked up car and washing machine collections around older homes.

Even though most of the roads were US or state roads, we didn't think the front end of the car was going to come lose from the pot holes and rough spots.

Obviously you've never been on the Piedmont of Alabama, Georgia, or the Carolinas or on the Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee/NE Alabama/NW Georgia, or the Smokies..I mean seriously WTF?

Ehh, North Arkansas isn’t that much more to brag about. Now Montana is a completely different heavenly animal. If I was retired or filthy rich I’d buy a big fancy cabin home in Montana and move there tomorrow. The weather there was phenomenal and it’s like time just slowed down when I was visiting there. So laid back

I didn't word it well, I was referring more to extreme southern LA/MS/AL, which is where I spent the majority of my time.

Still worth it. Plus if they are moving away from California to get away from the shite show then odds are they aren’t the whack jobs you see in the big cities of California moving there.
