I would not be surprised if more older coaches pack it in like Saban.

Maybe some younger ones as well. Cash out on the last contract and live off investments on the beach.
The inability to build a team and truly train and develop players could be frustating with nothing more than strings of one year players. Now we have a player transferring in the playoffs from one team to another,
I also wonder how those players who needed to be developed in college maty fall through the cracks and never get the shot they deserved. As the colleges pay more and more they will expect instant results without the patience they once had,
The NFL would deteriorate under the status quo in college football right now.

What an odd and ignorant comment.

Millions for me but for thee

My interest in CFB has never been lower. The NIL and unregulated portal killed it for me. I used to always avoid OT on Saturdays so I cam watch games all day now if Saturday is ny day off I try and land some OT.

Those will be the exception, not the norm.
I mean guys are getting paid a lot less to manage AA baseball teams and play games in places like Montgomery, AL and Pearl, MS and they deal with weekly roster turnover.
I think as long as they're getting paid 10-12 million dollars a year they will suck it up and be miserable. Every now and then a Chris Petersen will come along.
Kirby has talked about it before, but he's too much of a football psycho to actually retire early.
Saban coached longer than most. He retired in his 70's. That's been rare for some time now, so I'm not sure he's really a good example of what you're trying to get across.

Another ignorant retort. I do not mind players getting paid. The portal and year to year contracts are the flaws that could kill the goose

Saban may have coached until he croaked without the portal.

Saban packed it in because he couldn't stack his roster as efficiently as he could in the old era, which gave him competitive advantage.
Had little or nothing to do with frustration not being able to develop players. Saban famously "processed" players all the time in the old days and nobody really faulted him for it. Those bottom roster guys weren't beyond development he just wanted the stack the deepest roster in CFB year in and year out.

That's a byproduct of being 72 years old. The oldest coach in college football right now is a 73 year old Bill Belichik.
He was 12-0 in year two at Alabama and won the natty in year 3. He's the greatest of all time. Building a deep roster was a component of that, but so was elite coaching, preparation, and development.
He had the #2 overall class signed the week before he retired. The year before that he had the #1 overall class, which really just blows your argument up completely.

When did I say he wasn't a great coach, great recruiter, or wasn't getting it done?
I'm just saying what pushed his arse out of the door was the shifting landscape that had just really begun. He accurately read the tea leaves and got TF out... I'll give him even more credit for that - he left before the inevitable losses were coming.

Yeah...Portal culture is like Kryptonite to Saban culture.
Remember how he'd "sign" players WAY over the scholie limit, evaluate (basically give them a tryout in Spring practice) and then process them out, a kind word for cut, leaving them twisting in the wind?
Yeah, players aren't putting up with that shite now...especially when Saban's bag $ wasn't guaranteed...because you can't complain about illegal compensation.
