Why are so many new vehicles off-roady when it appears that almost no one is off roading?

Watching a video on an ‘off road’ version of the Honda Passport and thinking to myself ‘Where does this end?’
I never see dirt on any ‘off road’ package vehicles in my area (TRD Pro, Z-71, Raptor, take your pic).
Theories?

People go to the car wash after getting their car muddy?

Because it gives the buyer an adventurous persona, and lots of buyers want an adventurous persona.

Boring lives. People like to imagine they'll go somewhere where it's needed.

People use their vehicle to project a certain identity. It's baked into American culture.
Every time i've posted the truck tow/haul or 4x4 off-road use data people get butt hurt and downvote because they feel attacked.

OP hasn't driven in New Orleans recently. You can't get around that town without 4-wheel drive and at least 18 inches of clearance.

The amount of soccer moms driving z71 Tahoes and suburbans and elevation expeditions to drop off Jayxton at preschool around me is absurd.

Sports cars and no one racing them.
4 door cars for single couples.
Blinkers on BMWs.
Why?
The SUV thing is best of all worlds. You don't always need a car for six people. You don't always need a car that can handle rough roads. You don't always need internal storage. You don't always need something decent on the road. The new SUVs provide ability to do all of those without having to excel at any one.

All the overland bullshite strapped to the sides and roof are a little much for flat arse Louisiana. Maybe it would be better on a rig in the mountains.

Good replies so far. It is all about projecting an image.
I noticed it with Chevy truck commercials. No features or specifications, just worried about how other people see you. Pathetic.

It snows here a few times per year and that 4wd is handy.

Because much of Louisiana’s roads are virtually impassable.

While I agree, there’s a huge market for people who want the spacious interior without driving a minivan.

Because that's what is selling. Make what people want to buy, or they will buy something similar from somebody else.
