Question - Who leaves their rifles in the deer stand?

quote:

MARINGOUIN — A Maringouin man has been arrested in connection with stolen guns taken from deer stands, according to the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office.

John Callaway, 43, was arrested on two counts of simple burglary and two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Deputies say the investigation began after the Sheriff’s Office received a report on Dec. 31, 2025, of a firearm stolen from a deer stand. A second report involving another stolen firearm from a deer stand was made on Jan. 11, 2026.

I really don't see any benefit to leaving a riffle in the stand unless they're having to army crawl 2 miles on the way in.

What if you see a big buck walking out or back in to your stand

You'd be kicking yourself in the arse for leaving your gun

I have never known someone to leave a rifle in the stand. What kind of people would do that?

I’ve done it on occasion when I’m working night shifts and can’t have a weapon in my vehicle at work and don’t have time to run home and get it when I knock off.

Seems unfathamoble to me to leave a rifle in a stand. Caring for my rifle was something I was taught early on from my father. If we went hunting and returned without a rifle, we were as good as dead.

A felon who does not want to be transporting them to and from the woods, carry a cross bow to a stand with a gun that stays in it.

I left my gun in my stand once.I had to take a dump really bad, walked a little ways downwind,
As I was finishing up saw a big deer with his head down,he raised it up and was a 10 point, one of best bucks I’ve ever seen in the woods. Was only about 75 yards away.Happened years ago,I’ve been sick about it ever since.

Similar thing happened to an old man that lived nearby except he had his gun.Nice buck walked in front of him as he was taking a dump.
Recoil knocked him backwards onto his pile of crap.
He got the deer though.

Once in college because we couldn't have them in the dorm and it was safer there than on campus parking lot.

Not saying this happened, but it’s possible that during primitive gun they may would leave the rifle with the good scope in the stand and pack the .444 or whatever for green jeans to see. But yeah, no idea why you’d leave a gun in the stand

I oughta be able to leave a glock 17 sitting on a curb in north baton rouge and come back the next day and find it exactly where I left it or at the most, brought inside by a kind person to keep it out the weather.

Theft is not treated nearly as severely as it should be. It's a heinous crime.

Did it while I was in the Navy and had a stand on private land, was too much of a pain checking gun in and out from base every time I hunted.

I know a HS principal that does it pretty regular.

Ever worried it wouldn’t be there when you came back? I’ve found used condoms in a stand near town before. I doubt the crack whore and her beaux could resist my tikka leaned up in the corner. I think I’d put it in a case and hide it in the bushes.

I always leave my 6.5 Creedmore in the stand. It will wound whoever tries to take it. I'm sure of it.
