Looking to see. If any of you have advice on how to handle new teenage driver

I plan on handing down my tundra

Some things people has said

1. Put the vehicle in his name so if somwthing happens they cant sue me, only him.

2. Put him on his own insurance not connected to yours

Any comments on these and any tips for insurance?

1. You can't put the vehicle in his name unless he's 18.

2. You'll miss out on family and bundle discounts and pay more.

Handing down a vehicle helped us if I recall. He’s on ours right now but he turns 18 this month and we are putting the car in his name and he will have to get his own insurance.

If he's living under, your roof, both are incorrect.

Tundra is a good, safe vehicle.

1. Dash cam 360
2. Good student discount (make him earn the keys)
3. No hauling
I would’ve been in a whole lot more trouble if the above existed in the 80’s.

If he is a minor, you are responsible. If he gets in an accident and suit is filed, you will be named in the suit as his parent. No dodging that one.

1) Prepare thy anus.
2) I am pretty sure if they are under your roof they need to be on your policy.
3) Even if they turn 18 and have the car in their name I suspect most places a policy for someone that young might be very expensive, IE no net savings.

There are some people who claim that you just "play dumb" and wait for an incident to add them to your policy. I would not follow that advice.

Best advice I ever got was from my insurance agent..

Put him in a car he does not like to be seen in.. best is a four door sedan grandpa drives..

1 and 2 are bad advice. Get a family plan. Add him to it. When"sued" for wrecks your insurance is sued not you personally unless it's malicous. If you have newer cars he won't drive you can exclude him. But expect a rise of 3-400 a month for him. Just what it is.

When I was 16 my dad put me on their insurance and it only cost and extra $18/month.

My daughter took my rates from 185 to 385
Called yesterday about my soon-to-be licensed son and it will likely go to around 685

He will be driving the 2011 Corollla that she drove for two years

Dont listen to anyone's advice here who hasn't done this in the last few years, its changing ever day

Wrong. I bought my own first vehicle at 16. You need a valid license to purchase a vehicle.

Wrong. My child's insurance on his own was 150.00 a month. To add him on my policy was double the cost ( in 2016).

Geico was the cheapest for a 16/17 year old ten years ago.

3 teenage driving age sons here. Find an insurance broker to shop coverages. I carry the highest limits and carry an umbrella policy. Not worth the risk of being underinsured.

After a quick inquery, current law states owner must be 18, or under 18 with a guardian on title until 18. My bad.
