Was considering with Blackmon resigning would we draft Downs?
We’ve got Justin Reid, Blackmon (who Staley loves at FS), and Sanker had a great rookie year.

Then you’ve got Howden who’s played well, but now is at best your 4th guy and is making 3.7 mil this year and more expensive than Blackmon and Sanker…

I wouldn’t mind holding onto Howden… but saving almost 4 mil for your 4th safety seems like something we may do

It's become far more common for teams to play three safeties, which means that if you cut howden, you're playing ing somebody who's not even on the team yet if anyone gets hurt. Furthermore, you still need special teamers

Why? Howden is cheap and has shown that he can spot start and play special teams.

Alonte is moving on. Sanker will be in that spot. It’s all planned out

Howden originally wasn't worth that much, but rookies have playing time escalators built into their contracts and he must have hit the threshold for a good bump (I think around $1.5 mil was his original base salary).

We really don't need the extra cap this year (we can create $85+ mil in space without any cuts), and I wouldn't risk depth over that amount, plus it shows he has plenty of on field experience, and he hasn't played poorly.

Howden has played a lot but under DA. New coach went and got 3 safeties right away and all play over him. I would say his time may be numbered as the next pick up cheaper at safety may be his pink slip.

No rush to move on from him before preseason; even if they grab another FA and draft someone. He’s still young, developing and is not expensive; the “cap hell” is very manageable, so don’t expect any desperate moves

the Saints not keeping Taylor would be a top 3 blunder in the last 10 years. and there has been quite a few blunders.

Taylor is a linchpin for our defense.

Taylor is going to get PAID. It might just be out of our hands

we will be the team that pays him. I don't give a frick about how much. he is that good and important to this defense.

eta. he wants to be here in Nola. so it basically is in our hands.

Both Underhill and Triplett have said they would lean 60/40 to him leaving. The Saints will want him but its really possible a team just backs up the Brinks and Mickey may not want to overpay like that.

The bigger question is with Blackmon resigning do they demote Sanker (who played outstanding) and grandfather Blackmon into the starting role, (until he gets hurt again) or allow Sanker to continue to ascend?

I would lose a lot of trust and respect for Staley if he indeed, as you say loves Blackmon) and starts him over Sankar given the rookie season Sanker put up.

To you question, Howden has played well as a reserve safety and on special teams. I see no need to cut him just because Blackmon has been re-signed.

IMO drafting Downs was a long shot at best anyway, but if he is on the board at * they will have a decision to make. One thing is certain, they will enter this draft like al the rest with zero expectation of "Having to" or "Needing to" draft any particular player or position.

Taylor isn’t worth what he’s about to be offered to move on.

I believe Sanker will be an upgrade at Alonte’s position.

Howden is a core special teamer too. Who is your replacement?

The DA thing is true, but he did still play 25% of snaps on defense this year (partly due to injuries), and 66% of special teams snaps.

He's not impossible to move on from but he is good depth for cheap for 1 more year. At best his replacement saves $2 mil vs. keeping him, and they have to learn our defense. If we needed to penny pinch this year he's definitely someone on the list, but we don't need to.

We should not overpay him. He’s a good player who’s had some good moments, but he’s not worth the top 10 DB money he’s likely to fetch.

Dude coached a bunch of JAGs to a top 10 defense. I'll trust him over my fellow keyboard warrior, but you do you

That's a tall order, but he would almost certainly be a better value

Overpaying Alontae Taylor is the exactly the wrong move for where the Saints are right now.
