Clemson probably won’t be ranked, but they are a big enough brand to make this intriguing. Lane Kiffin’s first game as HC makes this the most exciting game in a long time though.

Help me out, what was the last big HOME game against a non-conference opponent? My brain goes to 2007 Virginia Tech, but surely we’ve had a better one since then?

UCLA, West Virginia, etc don’t really move the needle

We’ve had so many openers at neutral sites.

The key word is ‘home.’ Pre-SEC Texas A&M would be my pick.

quote:

Sept. 13, 1986 — LSU 35, Texas A&M 17: The Tigers lose their senior backfield trio from 1985 in Jeff Wickersham, Dalton Hilliard and Garry James, but LSU reloads with Tommy Hodson at quarterback and Harvey Williams at tailback. Hodson throws for 193 yards and a touchdown. LSU goes on to win the SEC title. Hodson becomes LSU’s all-time passing leader (9,115 yards), a distinction he still holds.

i was a freshman in high school and was at this game with my dad. felt like a huge win, in fact, after the game we left our seats in the SEZ and walked to see the players come out the stadium afterwards. I want to say it was Eric Andolsek, coming out with his boxed meal and I remember thinking how gigantic of a human he was. great memories.

Virginia Tech was #9 in 2007 before they came into Death Valley and had their dreams crushed.

#4 LSU vs. #3 Oregon 2011
Les Miles punishing run game with Spencer Ware and Michael Ford

Edit - Yes, I missed the HOME part. Either way, that was a good game. I was at home watching it.

UCLA, West Virginia, etc don’t really move the needle

West Virginia was the #22-ranked team and undefeated when they came into TS to play an undefeated 15th-ranked LSU. That was a big game. There was a lot of excitement for that game.

Lane Kiffin’s first game as HC makes this the most exciting game in a long time though.

But this is what I think kicks it over the top for the excitement level for LSU fans.

Here are the power conference games in TS since 2007 that I can find, it was not a particularly overwhelming list. People were excited for the WVU game and also excited for the chance to get some payback against UCLA. But neither should match the excitement for the new coach with a new team vs a program like Clemson.

2010 - #22 West Virginia
2012 - Washington
2017 - Syracuse
2024 - UCLA

In my time as an aware (not counting my very young years) LSU fan, this is the most excitement around a new coach I can recall since the hiring of Bo Rein was announced, and I think this is greater. There was excitement for Hallman (believe it or not), DiNardo, and Saban, but not on the level of either Rein or now Kiffin. And I think Kiffin moreso because of current media engagement compared to days past and the fact that he is so familiar to LSU fans.

Keiland Williams is still running.

As someone who grew up in Virginia during the Michael Vick era and attended the loss at Lane in 2002, that game was a top 3 home game for me all time. Stayed until the clock hit 0 to watch us beat that entitled and loser fanbase 48-7. Did them a favor by knocking Glennon out and ushering in the Tyrod era.

Funny enough that game was the difference in both teams making the national title game.
