Marty Supreme breakout Odessa A’zion has dropped out of Sean Durkin’s forthcoming A24 film Deep Cuts after her casting faced criticism.

The film, an adaptation of Holly Brickley’s 2021 novel of the same name, stars Drew Starkey and Cailee Spaeny as two music-obsessed twenty-somethings as they navigate ambition, belonging, and adulthood over a decade.

A’zion’s casting as Zoe Gutierrez was announced earlier this week; however, fans of the book quickly pointed out that the character is of Mexican heritage, which A’zion is not.

A’zion’s recent Instagram posts are flooded with comments from people accusing her of taking roles from Mexican artists.

Posting on her Instagram Stories late Wednesday, the 25-year-old actor announced her decision to exit the film, saying she was not aware of Zoe’s identity before she accepted the role.

“Guys!! I am with ALL of you, and I am NOT doing this movie,” A’zion wrote.

“Thank you guys for bringing this to my attention. I AGREE WITH EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU! This is why I love you guys. I’m so sorry that this happened. It is SO important for me to let you in on how it all went down: I went in for Percy, but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes! I’m so pissed y’all, I hadn’t read the book and should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting"

Letting Instagram dictate your career decisions seems like a bad move but I'm clearly not an actor so who knows.

They aren't going to applaud her for turning it down.

I will laugh if the next actress isn't "right" either, but keeps the role anyway.

Actors (and everyone else) may benefit from less social media. This person was bullied by a small group of activist types that would be better ignored

We don't want to go down the identify rabbit holes because it destroys decency and divides people into progressively smaller and smaller identity groups. The identity of the actor (within reason) just doesn't matter in an absolute sense as much as the story and storytelling.

Mexican isn't even a racial group. And an amer6film involving Mexican characters ought to be viewed as a good thing to people that want to focus on diversity issues

Race swapping is fine unless it's whitey getting a role.

Aside from that idiotic septum piercing, Odessa is pretty hot in "I Love LA" with Rachel Sennott.

Her mom is Bobby Hill?

How dare they!

Seriously I wish they would just let actors act. These same people complaining probably wouldn't care if it was a black actor playing the role of another character's race.

She looks more latino than some actual Mexicans I know

Caving to the court of public opinion rarely works out well.

yep. denominators matter, which is something that everyone shoudl remember when considering the online mob.

that said, women are addicted to approval and allergic to criticism, and the easy, feel-good solution for her in this case was to appease the mob for some short term approval.

OK, so...

1. What race is 'Mexican" and how is she not that same race?
2. I'm guessing these people don't view "Mexicans" as "white," which is the only reason this is a story and she felt led to do this. That begs the question: Why don't we ever see stories like this when white people are race swapped out of roles? Can this happen to the guy cast as Snape in the Harry Potter show?

That would be celebrated for it's groundbreaking and ideology-breaking stance.

Good for her.

Just kidding...what a fricking idiot. Also there are Gutierrezes that are basically white. I have some in my family and they are blonde hair, blue-eyed Hispanics.
