I got the diabeatus.

Well controlled with meds and diet, and I wear a CGM.

I have always had sunrise syndrome. I can fast for five days, but my blood sugar will spike in the morning.

But as I’ve watched the pattern and gotten better control, I’ve noticed that coffee seems to add to the spike.

When it comes to earthly pleasures, my morning coffee is second only to one. I really don’t want to give it up.

Is there anything I can do that will let me keep my morning joe?

What are you putting in the coffee? Black coffee alone usually doesn’t spike glucose in most people.

Probably best to talk to your health care team before making any adjustments but it may just be the "dawn phenomenon" causing your spike and not the coffee. I'm a Type 1 and do know that some diabetics experience a spike from caffeine but I'm not certain how common this is.

I'm guessing you already know but the "dawn phenomenon" is when your body releases hormones early in the morning causing your sugar to spike. You could try holding off on any caffeine a few hours after waking up and see if the spike is similar to mornings you have caffeine. If it does this might be more of an indication it's not the coffee.

Black coffee alone

That’s all I drink. If I’d wanted a cup of cream and sugar, I wouldn’t have asked for coffee.

Easy easy. It was just a simple question. How much does it spike your glucose, out of curiosity.

It will absolutely spike cortisol which will spike blood glucose. Does it to me every time at least 10-15 pts.

Type 1 or 2? I've read that caffeine can increase insulin resistance in the short term and that seems to hold true for me. I have to increase my insulin dose by a tiny bit if I'm having coffee with breakfast. From what I can tell it doesn't have a long term effect; that is, drinking coffee every morning won't make you more insulin resistant. It just blunts the effect of insulin if you have it with a meal.

Make your first cup some decaf. I know, I know. But get some really good Swiss water process beans. Wait about two hours until you consume regular/caffeine. Report back.

I usually drink coffee first thing after getting up in the morning.

I was told to eat something, preferably protein, prior to that first cup of coffee to help minimize the cortisol spike.

Drink water first. Wait about 30 minutes before coffee. That should help reduce cortisol spikes.

I’ve got my average down to about 136 and falling. (I’ve clocked an A1C over ten in the past, so that’s good for me.) With weight loss and meds, I can keep it in a normal range some of the time now. Still work to do.

It goes up about 30 points with coffee.

Sorry, I’m a little edgy when it comes to coffee.
