They always arrived just in the nick of time. What were they so busy with they couldn't help out other times? Makin' a nest? Lazy writing if you ask me.

"Oh God, not another elf!" -- Hugo Dyson, when Tolkien said he would read a new Lord of the Rings chapter to their literary group at Oxford

Thankfully Samwise didn't end up bringing that idea up otherwise we wouldn't have one of the greatest movie trilogies ever.

Except it doesn’t make sense for a number of reasons. One being that the eagles aren’t just giant birds to be told what to do. They are actually older than the awakening of the elves.
Gandalf:
"How far can you bear me?" I said to Gwaihir.
"Many leagues," said he, "but not to the ends of the earth. I was sent to bear tidings not burdens."
Another being the need for secrecy, and another the fact that they are sentient beings, however old and powerful, could still fall to its power (let’s not have evil fighter planes flying around…Wingwraiths?)
fricking nerds.

that's why AI is the dumbest thing ever. The whole video doesn't make sense.

You don't think Sauron would conjure up a orc bat or something? Then we would have Middle-Earth Top Gun.

The eagles took a lot of convincing to do anything direct. They, like the elves, are made of nature (in a sense) and tend to not do things that would disrupt the flow.
They're like the ents in that regard; it took the slaughter of a huge portion of his forest before Treebeard and his folk were willing to take the fight to Isengard.

Exactly, I hate the "why didn't the eagles fly them straight to Mt. Doom" people. Outside of the eagles specifically being messengers of the king of the Valar, Manwe, the entire point of the trilogy is for them to sneak into Mordor because they knew Sauron couldn't conceive of anyone trying to destroy the ring. The Eagles flying them straight there would defeat that entire purpose and lead to Sauron getting the ring back.

“There is evil there that does not sleep.”
Always liked that line from the movies. Pretty hard to miss a few large, out of place birds coming in hot in your airspace
