Thoughts on Civ 6 and 7

Long story short, I played a ton of Civ 5 way back and recently saw Civ 6 on sale for like $5 (no dlc) and have been playing and really enjoying it.
Would you recommend I just pull the trigger and upgrade to 7 or get some DLC for 6? And if so, which DLC should I be looking at? I really like the espionage, alliances, and statecraft stuff

I haven't bought 7, it's too expensive even when discounted. The recent reviews on Steam are not good. Here's part of one:
quote:
Civ VII has stripped away the freedom to build your empire your way and replaced it with scripted crises and erratic AI behavior. It’s frustrating, unfair, and frankly, not fun. I’m uninstalling and going back to Civ VI.
Pros:
Graphics are decent.
Cons:
The Age System breaks historical immersion.
Crisis mechanics are arbitrary and punishing.
Diplomatic AI is completely irrational (punishes you for being attacked).
Crisis Cards pile misery on top of bad mechanics.

I'd probably recommend Civ VI + Rise & Fall expansion.

Civ VII is slowly improving, but the things you pointed out are some of the weakest aspects of it right now, IMO.

V was easily my favorite. Never could get into VI. My favorite games are complex games, but I'm too old to learn new complex games so I keep replaying the same games. That said, it seems the series did decline after V.

I bought 6 a long time ago, and somehow only have 9 hours in it. I'm reinstalling to to figure out why.

Try as I might, I couldn't get into anything after Civ II.

VI ended up being a pretty damn great game by the time all was said and done...it just took 4 years a couple hundred dollars in expansions to get to that point. 2020 CIV VI vs 2016 Civ VI are night and day.
Releasing a half-baked game and slowly making it playable has been the M.O. of the series over the last couple of releases, unfortunately, and it really bit them on the arse with VII. It'll be interesting to see how (or if) they recover. The ages mechanic was such a dumb idea to implement in the base gameplay and probably ultimately cost a lot of people their jobs.

In civ 7 Harriet Tubman is the leader of America

I had no idea it was going to be as bad as it is.
Every civilization essentially resets with every age, all your work is for nothing
The culture-change-with-era mechanic was stolen from the game "Humanity", which actually does it better
6 was pretty solid
Go with 6

Wait for the Civ 6 DLC to go deeply on sale and pull the trigger on that.

Civ 6 is the best game they have created (with the dlc packs) and it’s not even close

6 is fantastic.
Haven’t played 7 but I promise 6 scratches the itch. 7 is debatable
Get VI expansions. Try Deity with either Victoria or Elizabeth on islands

I have 300 hours on Steam with Civ V. I don't think I played it off a disc, but possibly.
As a reality check, it must be multiple thousands (probably 3) combined for Civ I - IV, pre-Steam (yeah, buddy, I'm old, wanna fight about it?) - and I played less than 2 hours of VI. I never even considered buying VII.
Draw whatever conclusions you want from that.

Ive only ever played 7 and enjoy it, but also totally understand the critiques.
Newish to the franchise but the fact that so many leaders and civs are behind pay walls is disgraceful. is it the same with all others?
There is apparently a big update coming soon, i havent seen much about it though, something about any civ any era, no more legacy paths, new victory paths.

Get back to Civ 4 and check out the Rise of Mankind: New Dawn mod. It’s a whole new Civ dropped on top of Civ 4. New leaders/civs, techs, policies, units, buildings, war and city mgmt mechanics.
It also extends the early game so ancient-late classical era is not a handful of turns relative to the rest of the game. It forces you to compete in the early game rather than an autopilot/scripted opening. Late game has more modern techs that have either become reality, potential reality and new future theoretical science. Everything in between is just better. I loved it, unfortunately I switched to a Mac last year and I can’t play it anymore without buying a VM

That’s what im going to do
Civ games are the only games I’ve ever played on a computer so the steam sales are new to me
I bought the game for $5 and it would cost me $70 to get the two main DLC

Harriet Tubperson, thank you very much.
Better than Tubgirl, I suppose.

Lol, same for me. I might be the minority here, but I think Civ 3 was the best. I still play it today.
